Encompassing 314 square miles, the District is geographically one of the largest in Michigan. Professional planners predict that the area will continue to grow as an attractive, low-tax area for retirees and vacationers. The twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario provide the urban hub for eastern Chippewa County and Northern Ontario. While continuing to retain its rural/small town atmosphere, the area still offers a wide variety of cultural and recreational facilities. The St. Mary's River, world famous Soo Locks, Lake Superior Sate University, and numerous inland lakes are all located within the geographic district.
