Job Description

Role:
The advisor is responsible for advising and registering students for courses that will enable them to complete their degree program in a timely fashion.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Guide students through the admissions, registration, and graduation application process. Monitor students' progress and provide support to increase retention and persistence to graduation. Interprets and explains College policies and procedures, participates in preparation of orientation and presents academic information to new students and parents during orientation. Assist students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
Responsibilities could also include:
transfer process, International students and student life. Maintain current knowledge of all degree and certificate programs, including curriculum, job prospects and outlook. Collaborate with faculty advisors to provide academic advising to returning students concerning programs of study and degree options. Respond in a timely manner to student inquiries Establish and maintain relationships with Academic Affairs staff to understand and clarify departmental expectations Maintain student files and records, document all pertinent student information, update computerized information system regarding changes to student status Provide advisement at recruitment events on and off campus Assist in recruitment of potential students by advising them of general academic requirements Complete other advising duties such as conducting degree audits, tracking retention, completing College forms, etc. Other duties as assigned
Knowledge and Skills:
Education Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred. Experience One to two years of experience working with students preferably in the areas of academic advising, career counseling or a related area. Interpersonal Skills Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the college for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation. Other Skills Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, coordination and excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse academic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff. Competencies in networking with community partners and local employers Physical Requirements The work is mostly sedentary; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Work Environment Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office. High level of energy and enthusiasm. Evening and some weekends required. Travel necessary.
