Job Description
Job Summary Safe Routes to School is a statewide program funded through the NJ Department of Transportation with two simple goals: Where it is safe, get kids walking and bicycling; where it is not safe make it safe. The Safe Routes to School Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the Hunterdon County Safe Routes to School Program, designed to engage and educate students in grades K-12. This is an established program that includes the participation of approximately twenty elementary/intermediate schools and five high schools within Hunterdon County. The Safe Routes to School Coordinator will have a passion for improving bicycle and pedestrian safety, experience working with students in grades K-12, be comfortable presenting in front of groups, have the ability to apply creative methods to develop and enhance program components. Ideal for a candidate looking for hands-on work that will make a difference in the community. No two days are alike with this position~ mornings may include participation in a walk to school event or developing new offerings; midday may find you presenting to groups of students, facilitating a walk assessment or hosting a bicycle rodeo! Duties Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with school personnel, parents, guardians, students, and local law enforcement to ensure program success. Conduct outreach to elementary, intermediate schools, and high schools within Hunterdon County to offer educational programs, activities, and events. Educate and empower young pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter riders to be safer on their way to and from school by developing and delivering in person interactive lessons, presentations, activities, and events to walk to school events. Facilitate seasonal walk/roll encouragement events and summer reinforcement programming. Support the development of School Travel Plans including facilitation of school committees, fieldwork, walk/bike assessments, and assist with implementation efforts, including demonstration projects and grant development. Maintain records of school activity and provide documentation in support of grant applications or recognition under the New Jersey Safe Routes to School Recognition Program.relevant Action Items. Support schools interested in participating in the Sustainable Jersey for Schools Program to advance Assist Safety Programs staff in conducting pedestrian safety campaigns, municipal walk and bike assessments, and other safety programming. Compile quarterly reports to document efforts. Qualifications Experience educating and engaging students in grades K-12. Ability to engage with special needs students a plus. Ability to present in front of large groups of students in the school environment, engage with school staff, community members and facilitate program events. Organizational and time management skills. Attention to detail and accuracy. Written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google Suite. Ability to prepare project plans and written narrative reports. Familiarity with Hunterdon County, NJ preferred Minimum Professional Qualifications Two to three years of direct work experience in a relevant field. A.A., B.A. or B.S. from accredited college or university with a relevant degree preferred Other Requirements Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle; willingness and ability to drive within Hunterdon County to school locations and transport equipment/event materials Ability and willingness to lift 25 lbs. (to transport equipment, event materials, etc.) Ability and willingness to walk up to 1 mile Recreational bicycle ability; own a bicycle and willing to use bike for events.
