Job Description

JOB Position Summary:
Eastern New Mexico University's (ENMU) Advising Center invites applications for a part-time, temporary Advisor. The advisor participates in the planning and delivery of virtual and in-person academic advising services and programs, during the afternoon and evening hours, which promote student success and increase student enrollment and retention by promoting programs, referring students at risk or in need of additional resources, with the primary objective to assist with making informed decisions concerning their educational goals.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist new incoming first-year students, readmit and post baccalaureate students in the development of an educational plan, including but not limited to choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goalsInform students about alternatives, limitations, and consequences of academic decisions (e.g., adding, dropping, and withdrawing from courses; change of program, major, and/or transfer institution)Educate students about course planning and registration processes and verify course prerequisites and requirementsServe on ENMU committees as designated or requestedRefer to available on-and off-campus resources to address individual needs, including career and personal counselingInterpret test results relevant to placement decisions and determine student readiness for university courses Make appropriate referrals for students perceived as at-risk, act as an advocate when appropriate, and serve as a source of support to studentsPlanning, implementing, and presenting workshops, including but not limited to Student Success, Freshman Seminar, Degree Evaluation, and Undeclared Major, both individually and in collaboration with other departmentsHelp set up, take down, and assist at various campus events such as open house, Major Fest, Dawg Days, special registration events, and other campus activitiesMeeting with prospective students and guests to provide information about ENMU's programs of study and to discuss individual educational goals Remain current regarding academic and administrative policies, procedures, catalog changes, technology used for advising services, and requirements for university degree programsGather, develop, and promote best practices for continuous improvementParticipate in individual and team professional developmentRegular and predictable attendance requiredPerform other duties as assigned
Minimum Job Requirements:
A bachelor's degree in the humanities or a related fieldOne to three years' experience in academic advising or related careers in post-secondary education, or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of the position

Ability to effectively analyze ambiguous information and respond appropriatelyExperience in group presentationsAbility to process and maintain highly confidential informationAbility to work effectively with individuals of varying backgrounds, abilities, outlooks, ages, and nationalitiesKnowledge of course disciplines, educational units, and educational historyKnowledge of curriculum and academic processes and policiesKnowledge of computerized student information systems (Banner Student Module is preferred)Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work professionally and effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse communityAbility to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse communityAbility to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitudeAbility to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of workAbility to establish positive and productive working relationships with other units on campusAbility to understand and interpret the history, mission, and goals of the University to students and other constituent groupsDemonstrate effective listening skills to interpret individual student needsAbility to promote a safe environment for students and coworkers, including de-escalating high-stress situationsAbility to effectively organize and file information both physically and electronicallyMust demonstrate integrity and maintain behavior aligned with the University and state codes of conduct.
