Aug 31, 2026 Job Description Position Summary The College and Career Advisor at The Maritime Academy of Toledo (TMAT) supports students in planning for life after high school through individualized advising, career exploration, and postsecondary readiness programming. This role helps students connect academic experiences to college pathways, skilled trades, military options, maritime careers, and workforce credentials, ensuring every student graduates with a clear and achievable plan. Duties & Responsibilities- Provide individual and small-group advising focused on graduation planning, postsecondary pathways, and career readiness.
- Assist students with college applications, FAFSA completion, scholarships, career credential programs, and workforce opportunities.
- Monitor student progress toward graduation requirements, credit completion, and career pathway benchmarks.
- Coordinate college visits, career exploration activities, job shadowing, internships, and industry partnerships, including maritime-related opportunities.
- Support students in developing academic plans, career goals, and postsecondary transition plans.
- Collaborate with teachers, leadership, and support staff to align advising efforts with school improvement goals and student success initiatives.
- Engage families in postsecondary planning through workshops, communication, and individualized support.
- Maintain accurate records of student advising activities, postsecondary outcomes, and required reporting data.
- Integrate basic mental health awareness and referral practices to ensure students receive appropriate support when barriers to success arise.
- Track senior activities, coursework, and graduation plans Desired Qualifications Required
- Bachelor's degree in School Counseling, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of college and career readiness frameworks, graduation requirements, and postsecondary planning processes.
- Experience providing student advising, counseling, mentoring, or workforce development support in a school or community setting.
- Understanding of credit recovery, transcript review, and college entrance processes (ACT, SAT, FAFSA, scholarships, credential programs).
- Ability to work effectively with diverse learners, including students facing academic, social-emotional, or economic barriers.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to TMAT's mission of career-connected learning, maritime pathways, and equitable student opportunity. Preferred
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Career Counseling, Education, or related field.
- Experience in college access programming, career technical education (CTE), or workforce partnerships.
- Knowledge of financial aid systems, scholarship processes, and career credential programs.
- Experience organizing career fairs, college visits, or internship programs.
- Familiarity with student data tracking systems related to graduation and postsecondary outcomes.
- Background in trauma-informed practices or student wellness supports. Physical Demands
- Primarily a school office and classroom-based role requiring extended periods of sitting, standing, and computer use.
- Frequent movement throughout the building for meetings, classroom presentations, and student support.
- Occasional evening or weekend events for family engagement, college nights, or career activities.
- Ability to travel locally for college visits, career events, or partner meetings.
- Regular interaction with students, families, and staff requiring strong interpersonal communication skills.
