About this Position The Academic Advisor provides holistic, student-centered guidance to a caseload of students, supporting their academic planning, course selection, and progress toward graduation. This role assesses student needs, interprets university policies, and makes appropriate referrals while elevating complex issues to advising leadership as needed. The advisor proactively promotes student success through ongoing communication, directed outreach, monitoring academic performance, accurate documentation within university systems and participation in standard university-wide events, including Orientation and Enrollment (O&E) and Commencement. They guide students through essential processes—including forms, appeals, and procedural requirements—while ensuring timely, clear responses to inquiries. In collaboration with colleagues and academic departments, the advisor contributes to student success initiatives, offers feedback on curriculum and policy, and may serve as a mentor within the advising team. The position also includes teaching 1-2 sections of UNIV 1111 and participating in professional development and campus engagement activities that advance the overall student experience. Academic Advising at OSU expects that advisors will demonstrate knowledge and implement NACADA Core Values and Core Competencies in their practice. Academic Advisors have a regular physical presence on campus to support walk-in advising needs and same-day student support; this requires a daily in-person presence on campus. This posting is for multiple positions serving either psychology majors or biology, physiology, and zoology majors. Required Qualifications Bachelor's A master's degree may be substituted for up to three (3) years of required experience. Terminal degrees may warrant adjustment to years of experience equivalency. (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)Academic Advisor I:

Knowledge & Technical Skills Strong knowledge of academic programs, degree requirements, curricula, and course prerequisites, including the ability to interpret academic records and placement information. Understanding of university academic policies, procedures, and regulations, particularly those related to graduation, enrollment, and transfer credit. Proficiency with advising technologies and student information systems, and ability to use data to track student progress and inform advising decisions. Advising, Counseling & Student Support Skills Ability to provide academic counseling and developmental guidance, including support related to course selection, goal setting, career exploration, and academic challenges. Skill in identifying and supporting at-risk students, providing proactive outreach, referrals, and follow up to promote persistence. Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills Strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills to address academic issues, evaluate petitions, and support decision making. Organizational & Professional Skills Demonstrated commitment to professional development and staying current with advising and higher education best practices.
