Position Summary The Employment Specialist serves as a primary liaison for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), supporting them in finding, obtaining, and maintaining meaningful, competitive employment within their communities. This role includes assessing individual strengths and skills, developing personalized employment strategies, building employer partnerships, providing on-the-job coaching, and ensuring that all accommodations, rights, and benefits are upheld throughout the employment process. The Employment Specialist plays a vital role in empowering individuals toward greater independence, self-sufficiency, and inclusion in the workforce. Key Responsibilities Career Assessment Conduct comprehensive vocational assessments to identify each individual's strengths, interests, skills, and support needs. Develop individualized employment plans tailored to each participant's abilities and aspirations. Understand the impact of intellectual and developmental disabilities on employment potential and design achievable vocational goals. Job Finding and Development Identify appropriate job opportunities within the community that align with each participant's capabilities and career interests. Build and maintain relationships with employers to promote awareness, inclusion, and understanding of IDD. Develop and implement job modifications and reasonable accommodations to ensure successful placement and retention. Support participants in creating professional resumes, cover letters, and job applications. Prepare clients for job interviews by practicing interview techniques and discussing disability disclosure as appropriate. Accompany clients to interviews or initial job meetings as needed. On-the-Job Support Provide ongoing job coaching, mentoring, and skill development to help participants adapt to their work environments. Monitor job performance and collaborate with employers to address emerging challenges or performance issues. Ensure that workplace accommodations are implemented effectively and reviewed periodically. Case Management Coordinate with Employment Support Professionals (ESPs) to provide consistent and effective participant support. Manage participant schedules, track hours, and ensure all required documentation is accurate and up to date. Maintain communication with families, guardians, and service coordinators to support ongoing employment success. Advocacy Promote workplace inclusion and the rights of individuals with intellectual disabilities in all employment contexts. Address and resolve employment-related barriers or discrimination cases in collaboration with advocacy partners. Work with community organizations, vocational programs, and state agencies to expand opportunities for participants. Documentation and Reporting Maintain thorough, confidential records of all participant activities, job placements, and progress reports. Prepare and submit required reports to funding bodies, state agencies, and organizational leadership. Track key outcomes, including employment retention, employer satisfaction, and participant growth. Qualifications and Candidate Profile Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Psychology, Vocational Rehabilitation, Special Education, or a related field preferred. Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in employment services, vocational support, or working with individuals with IDD. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage individuals, families, and employers effectively. Demonstrated knowledge of supported employment principles and ADA-related workplace accommodations. Excellent organizational, time management, and documentation skills. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
Reports To:
Program Director or Regional Manager Work Environment and Physical Requirements Primarily community-based role with travel to participant work sites, employer meetings, and partner agencies. Occasional office work for documentation, training, and meetings. Must be able to travel within assigned regions and maintain flexible scheduling based on participant needs.
