POSITION
College & Career Readiness Counselor Reports to: Head of SchoolMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher education. Masters preferred.
- College admissions experience.
- Must possess strong communication and writing skills.
- Valid Texas Driver's License with driving record that meets the requirements of the School.
- Candidates must successfully pass a DPS/FBI background check prior to commencement of instructional duties.
RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS
- Master's Degree in a related field
- Certified school counselor; if applicable
- Experience at the college level or in college preparation
- Gifted & Talented Certification - Minimum of 30 Hours
- Knowledge of Texas FHS endorsements
- Experience with onsite college visits and relationships with university admissions officers
- Acute understanding of the FAFSA process
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Core Responsibilities- Has strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; familiarity with the goals, objectives, and mission of an independent college preparatory school; the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population; knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admission policies, and financial policies and procedures
- Educating students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing;
- Initiating a middle/high school college awareness initiative that prepares the students for a comprehensive appreciation for their personal high school portfolio and college application process
- Meeting with middle school students in groups, as well as high school students, individually and in groups, to discuss their college readiness and course selections, including their individual college application procedures
- Work collaboratively on schedules for students and tracking their classes to ensure they are in alignment with endorsement track, credits, etc.
- Develop extensive network of relationships with local organizations and businesses in order to provide a wide selection of internship opportunities for the high school intern candidates
- Supervise and coordinate the dual enrollment and test-prep process in order to ensure the students' greatest opportunities for success in these areas
- Participate and attend Open Houses, College Fairs, and other events
- Develop programs for underclassman to assist in their preparation for college
- Coordinate college admissions representatives visiting campus and facilitate meetings between college representatives and the students
- Work with Registrar to maintain student records, including GPA's and transcripts
- Keep parents informed through minimal monthly communications such as newsletters, test date and other "informational letters", upcoming local and regional college events, and financial aide information
- Stay informed of, and comply with, applicable federal, state and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers and guidance staff
- Establish and maintain open communication through parent conferences, including student, administration and teacher meetings, in order to specifically discuss student progress
- Enforce and uphold the school's values, policies, and culture
- Model the school's values in all interactions with students, families, community members, and other faculty
- Work collaboratively with all staff members and participate in relevant and school-wide staff development activities
- Pursue and engage in opportunities for professional growth. Professional development may be prescribed by administration on non-instructional days as necessary for the benefit of staff and students
- Provide guidance classes to promote a positive and safe school culture; during available non-academic times such as electives and advisory periods
- Perform additional duties /responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek. May lift 5-10 pounds frequently, 10-50 pounds occasionally, and more than 50 pounds infrequently. Must maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, and twisting. May move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May work indoors and outdoors in varying climate conditions. Subject to visual acuity, speech/haring, hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity.Job Type:
