  • Full-time Peer Recovery Specialist / Peer Support Specialist(Must be registered w/VA Board of Counseling) Focus Point Mental Health is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and recovery-minded Peer Recovery Specialist to join our multidisciplinary team.
The Peer Recovery Specialist provides recovery-oriented peer support services to individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges. This role uses personal lived experience in recovery to offer hope, model wellness, strengthen self-advocacy, and support individuals as they build stability, independence, and connection. This position is rooted in empowerment, dignity, ethical practice, and the belief that recovery is possible. Key Responsibilities Provide one-on-one peer support that promotes hope, motivation, empowerment, and resilience. Use lived experience appropriately to build trust and model healthy coping and recovery skills. Assist individuals in identifying triggers, developing coping strategies, and creating relapse prevention plans. Coach individuals in daily living skills, wellness practices, communication, problem-solving, and self-advocacy. Help individuals access and use community resources, public benefits, behavioral health services, and natural supports. Support clients in building healthier relationships with family, friends, peers, and community members. Encourage engagement in recovery-oriented activities, peer support groups, treatment services, and community supports. Facilitate or co-facilitate peer-led groups, recovery education classes, support circles, or alumni activities as assigned. Provide follow-up outreach by phone, home visits, or community visits to support engagement and attendance. Offer calm, supportive encouragement during crisis situations to promote stability and reduce relapse risk. Support alumni programming, including sober events, peer groups, reunions, celebrations, and re-entry into treatment when needed. Collaborate with clinical staff, case managers, families, and multidisciplinary treatment teams while maintaining peer role integrity. Advocate for individuals receiving services and help reduce stigma related to mental health and substance use. Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation according to agency, state, Medicaid, and regulatory requirements. Participate in supervision, staff meetings, case conferences, training, and professional development. Follow confidentiality requirements, client rights policies, agency procedures, and the Peer Recovery Specialist Code of Ethics. Perform other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the program.
Qualifications Required:
High school diploma or GED. Personal lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery. Demonstrated stability in personal recovery and ability to use lived experience professionally. Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, Registered Peer Recovery Specialist, or eligibility to obtain certification. Completion of the 72-hour DBHDS-approved Peer Recovery Specialist training, or willingness/ability to complete required training. Ability to pass required background checks, including DBHDS criminal background investigation and central registry checks. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Basic computer skills and ability to complete documentation accurately and on time. Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain. TB screening verification required.
Preferred:
CPRS certification through a DBHDS-approved certifying body. RPRS registration through the Virginia Board of Counseling. Successful completion of the IC&RC Peer Recovery Specialist examination. Experience providing peer support, outreach, recovery coaching, or behavioral health services. Participation in peer advocacy, recovery, or self-help groups. Knowledge of local community resources and behavioral health systems. Skills & Personal Qualities The ideal candidate is: Compassionate, dependable, and grounded.
