Full Job Description Before You Apply:
Understanding the Role Working in a short-term residential shelter care facility can be deeply meaningful—but it is also demanding. Youth entering the Welcome Home program may be experiencing significant stress, trauma, placement disruption, or emotional crisis. Staff are responsible for maintaining a calm, structured, and supportive environment while working with youth who may at times express strong emotions, challenge limits, or struggle with regulation. Successful Youth Counselors are individuals who can remain steady and patient during difficult moments, avoid power struggles, support one another as a team, and maintain professionalism even when situations become stressful. This work requires emotional resilience, strong teamwork, and a genuine commitment to supporting youth through challenging circumstances. Program Overview FosterHope Sacramento's Welcome Home TSCF (temporary shelter care facility) provides 24/7 mental health support and basic care to foster children/youth in the child welfare system after removal from homes due to abuse or neglect, OR when transitioning between placements. We provide a safe, short-term care setting to assessed, stabilized, and then transitioned to longer-term placements. We provide these services in trauma-informed, restorative, and culturally responsive ways. FHS is getting ready to open its second location and are looking for individuals who can be flexible, understand the impacts of trauma, and are able to redirect behaviors utilizing calm, supportive, relational based means. Responsibilities Provide attentive care and supervision to the youth in care through out the shift, idenitfying opportunities for connection and engagement. Create a warm, comfortable, safe, and supportive environment, and ensure proper support to arriving traumatized children/youth. Be aware of each youth/child's individual needs and strengths and support each youth/child to feel safe and secure from arrival to transition. Implement house expectations and procedures in a firm, fair, and consistent manner under the supervision of the shift supervisor. Use trauma-informed, restoritive strategies to set limits for youth and children. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations. Prepare meals, assist with laundry and house cleaning, and provide daily assistance/guidance in children's personal hygiene, and room/house chore assignments. Support cleanliness and orderliness of the home, maintenance of grounds/yard, repairs of fixtures, furniture, equipment and the purchase household supplies as needed. Ensure youth attend classes, assist them with homework and other academic support, and provide them with recreational and/or developmentally appropriate activities. Ensure daily supervision and monitoring of children/youth's personal hygiene, room/chore assignments, special recreational activities, transportation, and program activities Transport and accompany youth to doctor's appointments, court hearings, therapeutic counseling sessions, supervised visitation, and extracurricular activities as needed. Review recent notes, safety plans, treatment goals, and care plans daily to ensure acitvities and engagement with the youth align. Document observations and progress reports for each assigned child daily. Identify the possible need for professional services and communicate findings to clinical staff. Document all services provided following Medi-Cal protocols in a timely manner. Participate in all individual supervision and weekly and monthly staff meetings and trainings. Immediately document and report any and all unusual incidents that occur inside and outside of the center. Abide all rules and regulations for Mandated Reporters and community care liscensing. Experience Must be 21 years of age or older. Physical and Environmental Requirements (Essential Functions) This position requires the ability to perform the following essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation: Move throughout the residential facility and surrounding areas and remain standing or walking for extended periods of time. Safely intervene in crisis situations using approved Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) techniques when necessary to ensure the safety of youth and staff. Lift, carry, and move items consistent with youth supervision and residential program responsibilities. Maintain situational awareness and respond appropriately in a residential environment that may involve emotionally intense, stressful, or unpredictable situations. Work in an environment where exposure may occur to secondhand smoke, elevated noise levels, and other conditions common to residential youth care settings. Staff must be able to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately during behavioral crises or emergency situations.

Do you have experience in working with high-risk youth and /or youth with CSEC involvement and/or substance use? Do you have at least 1 year of experience working with youth ages 11 - 18 and/or relevant lived experience.
