Overview:
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Direct Support Professional to assist an individual with a severe intellectual disability, in their daily activities and community engagement. The ideal candidate will provide essential support to enhance the individual's quality of life and ensure their safety and well-being during morning routine and community outings.Key Responsibilities:
Daily Preparation:
Assist in preparing for their day, including personal hygiene routines, dressing, and any necessary health-related tasks. Ensure that the individual is ready and on schedule for his daily activities. Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Provide support with ADLs such as eating, grooming, and mobility, ensuring that the individual maintains their dignity and comfort. Encourage independence by promoting self-care and personal responsibility where possible.Community Engagement:
Accompany to selected community activities and events, including park events, swimming, golf, and other activities that align with their interests. Facilitate participation in these activities to foster social interactions and community involvement.Transportation Support:
Assist with transportation to and from community events, ensuring the individual's safety during travel. Monitor behavior and safety in various environments, providing guidance and support as needed.Financial Transactions:
Support in managing financial transactions during community outings, including shopping or paying for activities. Ensure that all transactions are conducted safely and securely while teaching about budgeting and spending.Safety Monitoring:
Continuously monitor the individual's environment and activities to always ensure safety, especially in public spaces and during recreational activities. Respond quickly to any emergencies or safety concerns that may arise.Candidate Qualities:
Previous experience in personal support, caregiving, or in a related field is preferred. Understanding of intellectual disabilities and the ability to support individuals with varying needs. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and trust. Knowledge of basic safety protocols and emergency response. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with family members and other support staff. High school diploma or equivalent (required). Valid Non-Provisional Driver's License. Fully Vaccinated againstCOVID-19.
Previous experience in caregiving or a related field is a plus but not required. Strong communication skills, empathy, and a genuine desire to help others. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Must pass background checks and any required training certifications. Willing and able to transport individuals with disabilities using a company vehicle and/or your personal vehicle (with mileage reimbursement), within Montgomery County and the surrounding Washington, D.C. metro areaSimilar jobs in Silver Spring, MD
