Job Description

First UMC Brighton Campus 400 E Grand River Ave Brighton, MI 48116
Nursery Worker Part-time Position:
9:15-12:15 PM on Sunday mornings, working two Sundays each month.
Pay:
$15.00 per hour Job description: Provide nursery care for children, newborn to 3 years of age, at First UMC-Brighton while their parent(s)/guardian(s) attend worship and other church activities. Nursery workers will be dependance, reliable staff members who are kind and caring individuals. Nursery workers will provide safe and welcoming environments for children while in their care.
Duties:
  • Provide care and supervision for children in the nursery, age newborn to 3 years old, while their parents/guardians attend worship and/or a class.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all children under your care.
  • Arrive by 9:15 AM, wear a staff name tag, tidy the nursery, prepare the check-in table, and be prepared to welcome children and their families.
  • In a friendly manner, greet and welcome each child and their parents/guardians upon their arrival. Assist them with the nursery check-in process. Ask about any specific requests/needs of the child.
  • Engage the child in age-appropriate activities.
  • Change diapers and assist with toilet training as needed.
  • Provide a bottle and snack, as requested by the parent/guardian.
  • Communicate with the parents/guardians following the child's time in the nursery, sharing about their child's activities and any issues/concerns.
  • Follow the Staff Handbook policies and procedures.
  • Follow Safe Sanctuary policies and procedures.
  • In case of emergency, follow appropriate emergency procedures.
  • At the conclusion of the nursery day, close the nursery by doing the following:
  • Clean and sanitize toys and surfaces.
  • Tidy toys and other materials, returning them to their original place.
  • Empty diaper trash in the outside dumpster.
  • Provide a summary of the morning, including the children in attendance, and share any needs and issues/concerns with Rev. Lindsey Hall.
  • To request a Sunday absence: Make this request known to Rev. Lindsey Hall at least two weeks in advance of your requested Sunday absence via phone call. If the requested date is approved, arrange your substitute from the approved Substitute list.
  • If a last minute substitute is needed, due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances, communicate this need with Rev.
Lindsey Hall immediately. Once your absence has been approved, make your substitute arrangements. If a last minute substitute is needed more than twice, you may be relieved of your nursery position. It is important to be a consistent, reliable nursery worker. If a substitute is not found, the nursery will be closed for the day, leaving families unable to access the necessary nursery care.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • A background check is required for the position.
  • Previous experience as a babysitter, nanny, or other caregiving role.
  • Patience, compassion, and a genuine love of working with children and adults.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children, parents/guardians, fellow nursery workers, nursery substitutes, and Rev. Lindsey Hall.
  • Ability to create a positive, safe environment.
  • Experience with diapering and bottle feeding and/or ability to learn these skills.
  • Ability to kindly, and gently redirect children from unkind or unsafe choices, behaviors and activities towards appropriate ones.
  • Ability to care for multiple children with your fellow nursery worker, while maintaining a 1:4 ratio at all times. The maximum number of children in the nursery at one time is 8 children.
  • Be a dependable and reliable nursery worker, arriving to work on time, and staying the full duration of the shift.
  • Receive First Aid, CPR, and AED training (paid for by First UMC Brighton).
