Join Waypoint's Youth Emergency Shelter team and become a steady, supportive presence for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness, housing instability, or crisis. This is more than a job—it's an opportunity to help young people feel safe, valued, and empowered as they navigate some of the most challenging moments of their lives. What You'll Do As a Second Shift Shelter Staff member, you'll play a critical role in creating a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment during evening shelter operations.
You will:
✔ Welcome youth into the shelter and conduct intakes for new participants ✔ Support young people with immediate needs including meals, hygiene supplies, and community resources ✔ Build positive, trusting relationships while using trauma-informed and youth-centered approaches ✔ Conduct safety checks and maintain a safe, respectful shelter environment ✔ Respond to crises with compassion, professionalism, and effective de-escalation techniques ✔ Coordinate shelter operations, maintain documentation, and communicate important updates with team members ✔ Help youth develop life skills, accountability, independence, and confidence ✔ Foster an inclusive environment where every young person feels respected, supported, and heard Who You Are You are someone who: Connects easily with young people and builds trust through empathy and consistency Remains calm and professional during challenging situations Believes in meeting people where they are without judgment Values teamwork, communication, and collaboration Wants to make a meaningful difference in the lives of youth experiencing homelessness or crisis Thrives in a fast-paced environment where every day brings new opportunities to help others Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent required Additional education in social work, human services, youth development, or a related field preferred Experience working with youth, especially those experiencing homelessness, trauma, or crisis, strongly preferred Knowledge of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and de-escalation practices is a plus Strong communication and relationship-building skills Basic computer proficiency for documentation and communication Our Culture At Waypoint, our work is guided by shared values that shape how we serve youth, families, and one another: Be Brave and Open-Minded Embrace challenges, take thoughtful risks, and remain curious.
