Job Description

JOB TITLE
Resident Care Assistant
FUNCTION
Assists in the personal care and safety of residents during a designated shift. This differs from the Certified Nursing Assistant position because the employee is not certified and must abide by state/county regulations governing what duties a non-certified assistant is permitted to do.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist residents, when requested, with ambulation, laundry, bathing, grooming, dressing and lavatory needs. Ensure care is delivered with respect to the residents' right. Observes, reports and charts in medical chart; resident's symptoms, reactions and changes. Reports to family as condition warrants and document immediately. Assists with resident's meals in the dining room or if room service is requested. Makes rounds on wings every 2 hours or more often if necessary. Notifies Nursing Supervisor of any changes in resident's physical or mental condition. Reports all emergencies immediately to Nursing Supervisor or designated person "on call". Immediately responds to emergency buzzer or telephone system. Assist those residents needing help to the dining area and accounts for each resident at every meal. Immediately checks rooms of residents not attending meals to ensure that they are not ill or incapacitated. During emergencies, such as heart attack, accidents, or any other situation requiring immediate medical attention, dial 911 to initiate 911 and summon paramedics. Notify family and supervisor that an emergency situation has occurred. Be familiar with OSHA standards. Practice positive relations; respond to resident and family inquires and concerns or problems. Communicate about resident's condition between and among shifts and document accordingly in communication book and if necessary, resident notes. At the end of each shift, you must complete rounds with the next Resident Care Assistant assigned to your residents. Maintain and protect the confidentiality of resident information. Practice positive employee relations. Practice infection control policies and procedures. Comply with universal precautions. Inform supervisor of any real potential infection control concerns. Practice all safety and loss prevention policies; adhere to safety rules and regulations. Take remedial action when necessary. Attend in-service as required. Assist with resident move-ins.
Knowledge, Abilities and Experience:
Home health experience is preferred but not required for the position. Must enjoy working with the seniors. Ability to interact with residents who are highly susceptible to common illness with posing additional health risks and must maintain good personal hygiene and wear a uniform. Ability to handle emergency situations and to receive verbal and/or written directives.
Physical Specifications:
Ability to lift a resident with assistance of one person, stand for extended periods of time and may be required to climb stairs, carry, push, lift, reach, walk and grasp. The worker is subject to environment conditions. All duties and responsibilities listed are essential job functions. Marginal functions that are incidental to the performance of fundamental job duties have been excluded. Employees will be required to follow any other job-related instructions and to perform any other job related duties requested by their supervisor. Requirements are representative of minimum levels of knowledge, skills and/or abilities. To perform this job successfully, incumbent will possess the mental abilities or aptitudes to perform each duty proficiently.
