PCAs help with activities like bathing, dressing, eating, and personal hygiene, as well as assisting with transportation, errands, and companionship. They are often employed in a client's home or a care facility. Key Responsibilities of a
PCA:
Assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Helping clients with bathing, dressing, eating, grooming, and other basic personal care needs.
Providing Companionship:
Offering social interaction and emotional support to clients.
Transportation:
Assisting clients with transportation to appointments, errands, or other activities.
Home Management:
Helping with light cleaning, meal preparation, and laundry.
Communication:
Maintaining open communication with clients, family members, and healthcare professionals.
Following Care Plans:
Implementing and adhering to individualized care plans developed by healthcare professionals.
PCA Training and Certification:
PCA training typically involves 40 hours of initial training, with ongoing continuing education requirements. Training covers topics such as infection control, basic first aid, and assisting with ADLs. In Virginia, there are two different types of PCA, and CareAcademy offers training for both, according to CareAcademy.
