Independent Living Deaf Services Specialist Center for Disability Rights - 3.6 Rochester, NY Job Details Full-time From $16 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Civil rights Working with individuals with disabilities American Sign Language Human Services Associate's degree Full Job Description Independent Living Deaf Services Specialist Mission Statement RCIL is a not-for-profit, non residential organization that provides services and advocacy to people with disabilities and seniors. RCIL supports individuals' independence by providing information and assistance for housing, transportation, home care, securing benefits and other services. RCIL advocates for the full integration, independence, and civil rights of people with disabilities.
Job Summary:
With general supervision, provides referral and information, core service supports for housing, skills training, peer supports, and advocacy to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Under indirect supervision, provides advocacy to individuals who want to leave an institution and receives services in the community. Provides education, information and referral for institutionalized individuals. Assists individuals who were institutionalized in securing community based services. Responsible for assuring timely delivery of services and file maintenance.
Job Duties:
As a representative of RCIL, be committed in all that you do to support, perpetuate, and model the RCIL mission. Provide peer services to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing Responds to information and referral calls, assist with housing, benefits, skills training and advocacy and referrals for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing Provide outreach to people with disabilities in the community Refers individuals to appropriate community-based services Using the Independent Living Philosophy and RCIL's mission statement, assists institutionalized individuals in creating goal plans for independent living Advocates on behalf of institutionalized individuals in applying for and securing transition into the community. Advocates on behalf of and assists institutionalized individuals in apply for and securing community based services. Provides information and education in regards to individual's rights under Title II of the ADA and Olmstead decision. Completes paperwork, including case notes, in a timely manner. Documents direct and indirect contacts. Participates in agency sponsored events, including events at RCIL's action Center and advocacy actions. Other duties as assigned or required
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or Associates degree in Human Services or related fields and one year knowledge of community-based services and public benefits. A strong commitment to promote and advocate for the full integration of individuals with disabilities. Creativity and comfort in dealing with a wide range of diverse individuals and situations Fluent in ASL and deaf communication equipment Must have reliable mode of transportation
Essential Functions/Physical Requirements:
The Job Duties are representative of the essential functions of the position. The physical requirements for this position are those typically present in normal office environment conditions. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs. Reliable transportation is necessary as there may be local day business travel required of this position.
