POSITION TITLE
Development Coordinator
REPORTS TO
Director of Development STATUS:
Full time, non-exempt
PAY RANGE
$20-$22/hr
LOCATION
San Diego, CA (In Office 5 Days per Week)
WHO WE ARE
Words Alive connects children, teens, and families to the power of reading. We serve students of all ages and their families throughout San Diego County. During the 2022-2023 year, we served 5,000 children, teens, and families facing extraordinary life circumstances through family workshops, read alouds in classrooms, and teen book clubs. Words Alive is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Development Coordinator provides essential operational, administrative, and data management support for Words Alive's fundraising activities. This role supports the daily functions of the Development team through gift processing, donor database management, reporting, acknowledgements, event logistics, and administrative coordination. This position is ideal for an organized and detail-oriented professional interested in growing a career in nonprofit development and fundraising operations. The Development Coordinator helps ensure a high-quality donor experience while supporting efficient and accurate development systems and processes across the organization.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Development Operations & Data Management (45%) Process donations and maintain accurate donor and gift records in donor database systems. Coordinate donor acknowledgements, compliance documentation, and routine donor communications.• Support donor data hygiene, reporting, and list management efforts. Assist with tracking fundraising metrics, campaign results, and donor activity. Maintain organized digital and physical development files and records. Administrative & Team Support (30%) Provide administrative support to the Development team including scheduling, meeting coordination, supply management, and document preparation. Support execution of mailings, donor outreach projects, and campaign logistics. Assist with event preparation including registrations, materials, nametags, and attendee tracking. • Coordinate internal development calendars and task tracking. Donor & Community Engagement Support (20%) Support stewardship activities and donor engagement touchpoints, including calls, mailings, etc. Assist with volunteer and donor communications as needed. Help maintain fundraising materials, contact lists, and outreach resources. Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Bachelor's degree or combination of education and relevant professional experience. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Excellent communication skills. Comfort with Microsoft Office and basic database/data entry work. Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a collaborative environment. Preferred Prior administrative, customer service, nonprofit, or office experience preferred. Familiarity with CRM/database systems a plus. Interest in nonprofit fundraising, literacy, education, or community engagement preferred.
THIS POSITION REQUIRES
Ability to work on a computer and phone for at least 50% of the day. Typing and other repetitive activities for extended periods of time Ability to attend meetings, activities, and events throughout Words Alive's service area. Available early mornings, evenings, and weekends to engage with key stakeholders as required. Staff are often asked to help lift loads of 30+ lbs. regularly. Reasonable accommodations can be made as necessary. Access to a reliable vehicle or public transportation. Ability to pass a federal background check.
