The organizer will help increase awareness of the many flaws in Nevada's death penalty and will foster public support for ending the death penalty, with special attention to capital punishent's historical connection to lynching and racial oppression, alternative responses to violence in our communities, and the ways in which the death penalty fails to serve victim families and loved ones. The ideal candidate will creatively and effectively educate community members about the myths and facts regarding the death penalty, work with impacted people to share their stories, uncover new allies and unusual voices, and work with existing staff to develop a robust pipeline for individuals looking to engage with our efforts. The organizer will spend the bulk of their time interacting with community members, volunteers, activists, and decision makers. Special projects may be assigned to the community organizer to assist staff and Board and may include but are not limited to developing and implementing strategy, producing public communications for email and social media, and other projects on a case by case basis. A successful community organizer for NVCADP will be able to develop relationships across multiple identities and backgrounds, is committed to working to end systemic biases and prejudices within the criminal legal system, especially as they relate to the death penalty, and will cultivate grassroots power, especially in communities impacted by the unjust application of capital punishment. This position will work remotely, with in-person meetings, events, etc. in Northern Nevada, primarily located in but not limited to the Reno-Sparks area and surrounding region
About NVCADP:
The Nevada Coalition Against the Death Penalty is a statewide group of diverse communities and individuals working to build an equitable justice system by abolishing the death penalty through public education, media outreach, coalition-building and grassroots organizing. NVCADP is an educational nonprofit organization, incorporated in 2002, dedicated to exposing the flaws of Nevada's death penalty and mobilizing members to take action in opposition to its use and existence. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Identify and engage new supporters of abolition through outreach. Connect with impacted community members to educate and engage them in supporting the end of the death penalty. Educate community members, leaders, and elected officials on the importance of ending the death penalty. Recruit, mentor, and develop local leaders who can champion our cause. Host and coordinate events, meetings, and outreach efforts across Northern Nevada. Build connections with faith communities, conservatives, and the business community. Collaborate with fellow staff, Board members and community advocates to implement volunteering programs. Provide updates on efforts and projects to staff and the board. Perform data entry and essential administrative duties. Occasionally work on weeknights and weekends. This position involves some travel around Northern Nevada to attend community events, connect with community members and perform various other tasks, as needed. This position requires that candidates are comfortable spending extended periods of time outside to conduct community outreach and events.
Preferred Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:
Passion for speaking truth to power Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills Ability to navigate sensitive subjects with tact and compassion Ability to cultivate relationships and foster compelling narratives from individuals directly impacted by violent crime, the legal system, incarceration OR comparable experience working with individuals negatively affected by public policies or institutions. Prior experience or knowledge of basic community organizing principles Prior experience or knowledge about the demographic, social and cultural composition of Northern Nevada and an awareness of advocacy happening within the Northern Nevada community Demonstrated ability OR experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, spiritual and socioeconomic backgrounds. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt to a diverse array of communities, groups and settings. Ability to motivate and manage small teams of people. Self motivation and the ability to work well collaboratively. Proficiency in managing multiple priorities and deadlines. BIPOC, LGBTQIA, and organizers impacted by violent crime or the death penalty are strongly encouraged to apply. Spanish language skills are welcome but not required.
Compensation:
$25/hour for 15-18 hours per week.
Approximate Annual Leave accrual rate:
2 hours/month.
Approximate Sick Leave accrual rate:
