Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided the highest quality of behavioral health services to residents of the cities of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia, offering a comprehensive array of programs for both children and adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders.
YOUR DAY TO DAY AS A COMMUNITY OUTREACH SPECIALIST
The full-time Community Outreach Specialist at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board plays a crucial role in enhancing our agency's capacity to respond effectively to community crises and traumatic events. In this position, social workers, psychologists, counselors, and recent graduates will directly respond to the aftermath of traumatic events, providing essential support to individuals and families affected. You will collaborate with law enforcement and community stakeholders to identify areas in need of educational sessions, such as Mental Health First Aid and Suicide Prevention. The role emphasizes relationship-building with various local sites to implement vital preventative training. Flexibility is key, as frequent attendance at after-hours and weekend events is required, ensuring prompt and compassionate responses during critical times. As the liaison between the Traumatic Event Response Program and community representatives, you will be instrumental in delivering high-quality and relevant resources to promote mental well-being and resilience in our community.
WOULD YOU BE A GREAT COMMUNITY OUTREACH SPECIALIST?
To qualify for this position, candidates must have the following: Bachelor's Degree in Human Services (Social Work, Psychology or Counseling). One (1) year of experience in group training facilitation serving various populations including adolescents, adults and community group representatives. Experience with mental health promotion and suicide prevention is required. Valid VA driver's license. Success in this role requires exemplary interpersonal skills to engage and connect with diverse populations, including adolescents, adults, and community representatives. Proficiency in mental health promotion and suicide prevention methodologies is essential, enabling you to provide impactful education and resources effectively. A valid Virginia driver's license is necessary for travel to various community events and engagements. Strong organizational and communication skills will help you navigate complex crises, ensuring timely and supportive responses to traumatic events.
