POSITION SUMMARY
First Presbyterian Church seeks to be a Christ-centered, open, and welcoming community, addressing the challenges of our time. The Director of Welcome and Involvement champions a vision and initiates efforts for the church to provide a welcoming environment for visitors and assists transition to church membership. Incumbent serves to fulfill our vision, especially as ministries of involvement play a crucial role in fostering relationships, deepening engagement, and nurturing faith at FPC. Incumbent coordinates the development and equipping of leaders, guides leaders' time and talents in developing programs and provides the congregation with richer opportunities, involvement and connection.RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
Creates a welcoming environment for visitors and assists transition to church membership. a. Greets visitors and requests names and contact information before and after church services. b. Monitors members' and visitors' attendance through attending Sunday worship and other congregation-wide events and initiates follow-up calls, notes, and/or emails. c. Develops tangible visitor outcomes to assist in growing the congregation. i. Ensures that church facilities have a welcoming ambiance. ii. Ensures up-to-date church information materials are available in the narthex, pews, and throughout the church. d. Identifies regular attendees who might participate in new member classes. e. Plans and implements Discover FPC membership classes as needed. i. Maintains/updates Discover FPC booklet, handouts, and slideshow presentation. ii. Coordinates all participants for new membership service. f. Follows up with new and existing members to assist with finding connections to the church based on their interests and passions to serve. 2. Serves as staff liaison to the Welcome & Community, Adult Education, and Missions and Outreach teams and attends team meetings. a. Provides assistance and support to each team with advertising and promoting activities and events, and by scheduling facilities and adding to/updating church calendar. b. Provides budget status for team leaders and submits expenditures and account information to Operations staff. c. Manages Church Center (CC) and Planning Center (PC) for teams. i. Maintains team rosters by adding and removing team members, leaders, etc. d.For Welcome & Community:
Assists and supports planning and implementation of Team-sponsored activities. Examples of previous activities include Simple Suppers, Simply Socials, the congregational breakfast and picnic, and Sunday Fellowship. e.For Adult Education:
Assists and supports planning and implementation of Team-sponsored activities. Examples of previous activities include retreats, FPC Reads, Sunday School classes, organization and maintenance of the church library, and production of Advent and Lenten devotionals. f.For Missions and Outreach:
Assists and supports planning and implementation of Team-sponsored activities. Examples of previous activities include Habitat for Humanity workdays, dinners held by local mission partners at our church such as Rescue Mission Christmas and Easter dinners and Matthews House Thanksgiving celebration, recommending FPC Reads books that reflect Earth Care and Matthew 25 themes, and interfacing with community leaders and potential new mission partners. 3. Facilitates recruiting of volunteers into ministry programs throughout the church. a. Uses information from interest inventories, spiritual gift surveys, referrals, and personal knowledge to recruit volunteers. b. Recruits and trains volunteers to serve as Worship Greeters. i. Creates and maintains a system for Greeter sign-up and ensures that each service, including special services, such as Christmas Eve, Good Friday, and memorial/funeral services, are fully staffed. 4. Maintains membership records. a. Enters information on new members and new attendees in Church Center and Planning Center. b. Monitors PC/CC to eliminate duplicates and remove records of those who have moved, died, etc. Ensure proper polity for adding and removing members. c. Maintains name tags. d. Assists with worship attendance and membership recordkeeping. e. Provides reports about church membership as needed. 5. Attends and actively participates in staff meetings and collaborates with other staff. a. Shares information about the teams for which this position serves as liaison to ensure all staff are aware of the teams' activities and issues, to determine possible collaborations, and to ensure there are no overlaps or calendar conflicts. b. Provides staff and other church leaders information about new members in order to connect the new members to ministries and groups.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrates a mature and growing Christian faith and a pastoral heart.
- Is a servant leader and team player who serves with energy, intelligence, imagination and love—through all aspects of ministry and with all ages and backgrounds of volunteers, church leaders, and teams.
- Ability to champion and cast the vision for congregational life and involvement, with particular emphasis on the welcome experience, fellowship, and adult education.
- Ability to adapt to new, enhanced, or changing opportunities for involvement and engagement.
- Demonstrates an ability to work collaboratively with church leaders, teams, and volunteers equipping and delegating as appropriate.
- Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication, management, organizational, and administrative skills.
- Ability to recruit, equip, and empower volunteers to fulfill their roles.
- Ability to use conflict management skills effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and ability to learn and use new software packages and databases such as Church Center.
- Understanding of budgets and purchase/expenditure protocols.
- Availability and willingness to attend Sunday morning services, and congregation-wide events which may include events during evenings and weekends.
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience preferred.
- Experience working in a ministry or non-profit setting preferred.
