The Office of Admissions is charged with assisting the campus in reaching its undergraduate admission and enrollment objectives in accordance with the University mission and campus enrollment goals. Department efforts are focused upon increasing the academic quality and diversity of the entering class while maintaining the required enrollment level. Admissions seeks to implement the campus admission goals by providing a number of services and events. Admissions promotes postsecondary education; encourages applications from historically underserved populations and schools; provides admission information to high school and community college counselors, teachers and administrators; provides admission advice to prospective freshman and transfer students; reviews and evaluates applications; develops recruitment strategies and events for admitted students; reviews coursework for transfer credit; and creates a presence on campus that is consistent with UCSB's mission and high academic standards. These services are provided by three units within the department: Visitor Center, Outreach Services, and Application Services. The Admission Counselor for Diversity Initiative will implement a series of programs that generate interest, application, and ultimately UCSB enrollment of high school and community college students with special focus on African American communities. Engage in collaborative efforts with university and alumni networks to deliver services to students, parents, school counselors, and community agencies working with college-bound African American students. Conduct visits to high schools and community colleges in order to inform prospective UCSB students, their parents, counselors and educators about admission policies and practices, and encourage enrollment at UCSB. Initiate outreach programs and provide pre-enrollment advising to prospective applicants and newly admitted students and their parents. Incumbent should process a thorough knowledge of University application procedures and admission policies and practices. The position requires strong counseling skills, exceptional public speaking skills, and solid time management and organizational skills.Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent experience Knowledge and experience working with a diverse population Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writingPreferred Qualifications:
Working knowledge of UC and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to prospective applicants and the public.Special Conditions of Employment:

20% High School and Community College Outreach- The incumbent conducts outreach to high schools and community colleges in order to inform prospective UCSB students, their parents, counselors and educators about admission policies and practices, and to encourage students

- Assist in the coordination of special events, both on campus and throughout California, that address the specific informational needs of the scholar applicant.
- Counsel and advise newly admitted students and their parents with regard to admission, enrollment, housing, financial aid, course selection and other concerns.

SB:
In partnership with Visitor Center staff, coordinate the LA2SB Program. Identify and host targeted schools for day-visits to campus to include activities such as admissions presentations, campus tours, and student panels.Advocacy interns:
Coordinate with the Assistant Directors within School Services to develop a team of Advocacy Interns who will serve as peer counselors to prospective students. Advocacy Interns will assist professional staff with Advocacy and Outreach duties.Counselor Services:
Broaden and strengthen our liaisons with school counselors at key high schools and community organizations. Activities include hosted counselor visits, Data sharing with key schools, and counselor in-service presentations to ensure familiarity with UC admission policies and UCSB selection criteria. Training ? Serve on the Admissions training committee and provide input for professional development activities that will enhance the cultural competency of all staff. Provide input and recommend enhancements to outreach initiatives that will strengthen UCSB's relationship to African American communities. 10% Campus Collaborations- Collaborate with SIOP to enhance effectiveness of student-sponsored outreach programs.
- Collaborate with Communications Manager to ensure all print, web, and electronic communications highlight UCSB's African American community. 5% Program Analysis
- Partner with Institutional Research and Public Affairs to lead focus groups with the UCSB Black community
