Job Description

Residential Full-Time Overnight Advocate (Victim Advocate I)

40 hours/week, Sunday through Wednesday overnight (9:15 PM-7:15 AM)
Salary:
$20.12/hour (Bilingual candidates receive an additional $1/hour pay differential)
Purpose:
The SafeHouse Advocate's primary responsibility is to respond to the needs of survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of violence residing in the SafeHouse. This full-time overnight position helps maintain a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed shelter environment during overnight hours. Duties include crisis calls response, advocacy, safety planning, resident support, documentation, coordination with staff, and completing routine overnight tasks that support SafeHouse operations. While rest or sleep may be permitted during quiet overnight hours, the advocate must remain available while on shift and be able to wake promptly and respond calmly and appropriately to calls, emergencies, safety concerns, crisis situations, and resident needs.
Essential Functions:
  • Perform eligibility screenings, intakes, safety planning, crisis intervention, service assessments, and provide community referrals for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of violence.
  • Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, advocacy, and de-escalation as needed during overnight hours.
  • Monitor the SafeHouse environment throughout the overnight shift and respond to resident needs, safety concerns, emergencies, and conflicts in a trauma-informed and client-centered manner.
  • Complete resident headcounts at the start of shift and as needed, and accurately document resident presence, overnight passes, and relevant shift activity.
  • Respond to crisis phone calls and walk-in clients.
  • Assess safety concerns and offer client-centered options to enhance safety and stability.
  • Assist residents with immediate daily living needs and help maintain a safe, calm, and supportive shelter environment.
  • Work closely with the SafeHouse team to coordinate services, assist clients in meeting personal goals, and ensure continuity of care between shifts.
  • Complete required reports, case notes, shift logs, and intake/service documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Prepare clear shift change information for the next shift, including safety updates, resident needs, and follow-up items.
  • Perform light housekeeping and assist with moving donations or furniture as needed (must be able to lift 20-25 pounds).
  • Participate in occasional on-call shifts and/or provide coverage for open shifts as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Residential Program Manager or Executive Director.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree (or currently pursuing) in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field, or a minimum of one year of direct service experience in a nonprofit human services agency.
  • Experience working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or other forms of violence.
  • Strong ability to work independently, remain awake and alert, and make sound decisions during overnight hours with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including residents, survivors, family members, law enforcement, staff, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated teamwork, flexibility, and commitment to supporting program policies and decisions.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and partnering agencies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including accurate and timely documentation.
  • Understanding of trauma, secondary trauma, client crisis responses, and trauma-informed care.
  • Availability to complete a required 30-hour paid advocate training provided by Alternatives to Violence (ATV).
  • Ability to pass a required criminal background check and attend victim services training provided by ATV.
