Position Details TITLE:
SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
As per the current Midland City Education Association (MCEA) Agreement (salary protection available).
POSITION SUMMARY
The School Social Worker helps to support the emotional, social and academic well-being of students. They provide individual and group counseling to students dealing with a variety of personal issues and help them develop coping skills to manage these challenges. They work with teachers, parents and administrators to develop individualized plans that help students succeed in school. The school social worker is integral to creating a safe and supportive school environment, helping students succeed academically along with developing the emotional and social skills needed to thrive in life.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Master's Degree in Social Work Possess a limited or full licensure as a Master Social Worker in the state of Michigan State approved certification as a school social worker Ability to withstand the physical and mental rigors of the position Demonstrated Technical Skills Computer knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, and other basic computer skills Familiarity with student information systems Possess computer competency and familiarity with emerging technologies Possess well-developed problem-solving skills Possess sound, independent judgment, including handling of confidential matters Ability to communicate effectively with parents, staff members, and students, verbally and in writing Pass background check
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Knowledge of data-driven decision making in relation to student behaviors and socio-emotional challenges Ability to complete psycho-social evaluations in the educational setting that are in compliance with IDEA regulations and reflect researched-based practices Ability to work in cooperation with members of the Student Support Teams to identify and develop effective intervention strategies Knowledge of data-driven decision making in relation to student behaviors and socio-emotional challenges Ability to conduct a Functional Behavior Assessment and create Behavior Intervention Plans Ability to use data to develop Present Levels of Student Academic and Functional Performance that guide goal development and intervention Knowledge of researched-based clinical interventions Ability to work with teachers, administrators, parents, students, and representatives from community agencies to access appropriate services on behalf of children. Understanding of Michigan Special Education laws and IDEA as these relate to the socio-emotional needs of children in the educational system, e.g. Positive Behavior Support, Seclusion and Restraint Adherence to all guidelines as established in the National Social Worker Code of Ethics Organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines Maintain an organized environment Work independently as well as with a team Maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality with regard to all district related matters and records Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day, as needed Assess student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration Participate in a variety of meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required resulting in optimum performance Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to state law and board policies Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution Respond in a timely manner to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. other teachers, parents, administrators, students, central office staff, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction Predictable, reliable attendance Fine motor skills and ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, to assist with student behavior management, to ensure student safety, and to lift and move equipment and supplies Able to stand or sit for long periods of time (up to entire shift as tasks require), as well as stoop, squat, bend, crouch, reach, kneel, and climb stairs frequently during the shift Able to ride in a vehicle, as necessary (e.g., training on occasion) Able to work indoors and outdoors during all seasons/weather/temperatures as permitted May require travel to offsite location(s)
