Position Summary:
The Student Success & Support Specialist collaborates with school staff, district personnel, community agencies, and families to support students facing barriers to attendance, engagement, wellness, and academic success. This role combines attendance intervention, student advocacy, and school-based social work practices to strengthen connections between home, school, and community.
The specialist provides direct support to students and families by promoting social-emotional wellness, improving attendance and school engagement, and connecting families with community resources to address social, emotional, behavioral, housing, and economic challenges. The position works closely with students experiencing chronic absenteeism, housing instability, mental health concerns, or family challenges while also supporting school staff in understanding the social and environmental factors that impact student success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct home visits and maintain regular communication with families to support student attendance and school success
Assist students and families in accessing community resources, including mental health services, healthcare, housing support for unhoused students, tutoring, food assistance, and extracurricular opportunities
Monitor and analyze attendance, behavior, and academic data to identify trends and develop intervention plans
Collaborate with school staff to implement attendance improvement and student support strategies
Maintain appropriate documentation, records, and confidentiality in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications and Special Requirements:
NC School Social Worker License (Area 006) preferred or eligibility to obtain licensure strongly preferred
Coursework preferred in social work or related field
Experience working with students and families in educational, counseling, social work, or community-based settings preferred
Knowledge of attendance intervention strategies, student support services, trauma-informed practices, and community resources
Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work effectively with diverse students, families, school staff, and community agencies
Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information appropriately
Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout the district
Terms of Employment:
Full-time, grant-funded position with continued employment contingent upon funding availability, program needs, and job performance.
