Akron Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and compassionate professional to serve as the Homeless Liaison. This mandated role ensures that students experiencing housing instability are identified, supported, and provided with an equal opportunity to succeed academically. The Liaison acts as the primary link between families, the school district, and community resources to remove barriers to education. Key Responsibilities
Strong management and emphasis on compliance and federal mandate alignment to
Akron Public Schools initiatives, in with accordance with the McKinney-Vento Act,
Managing family /student supports and connections to district-level systems work.
Commitment to removing barriers to education and supporting educational stability.
Fostering community and school collaboration in partnership with district personnel.
Identification and Enrollment
Ensure children and youth in transition are promptly identified and enrolled in school.
Manage school roster updates and provide necessary support to staff to mitigate
identification and enrollment concerns..
Guarantee students have full and equal opportunity to succeed in the classroom.
Mediate enrollment disputes and ensure immediate access to school services.
Staff Support and Training
Supervision of intake and programmatic personnel operating within the scope of
McKinney-Vento allowable programs.
Coordinate and lead professional development and training for school personnel to help
them recognize and support homeless students.
Participate in state-level technical assistance and professional development to stay
current on federal mandates.
Student and Family Advocacy
Provide referrals for families to essential services, including health, dental, mental
health, housing, and substance abuse programs.
Assist unaccompanied youth in obtaining verification of their status for college financial
aid (FAFSA) applications and provide guidance for staff to complete this function.
Disseminate public notice of McKinney-Vento rights in locations frequented by parents
and youth (shelters, food pantries, libraries) in easy-to-understand formats.
Community and School Collaboration
Coordinate with local Akron agencies and housing providers to streamline support for
APS families.
Coordinate transportation services to ensure students can remain in their school of
origin.
Develop communication channels to promote awareness and easy access for
communities and schools.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Education, Public Administration, or a related field
(Master's preferred).
Prior experience working with at-risk populations, social services, or within a public
school setting.
Familiarity with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and program
requirement mandates.
Experience working with Akron-area agencies and service providers.
Strong communication, empathy, and the ability to navigate complex legal and
educational systems.
