GWCS serves children primarily in the Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls, and Germantown neighborhoods of Philadelphia.
Position Summary:
The School Social Worker ensures students have access to the resources necessary for academic, social, and emotional development. The Social Worker will work collaboratively with the School Counselors, Teachers, Leadership Team, and Parents to make sure that individual students have the proper tools and guidance to effectively learn. The Social Worker will work with individual and small groups of students outside the classroom and will prepare whole group lessons to be shared within the classrooms. The Social Worker reports to the Director of Specialized Services.Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support students in the areas of mental and physical health and safety within the school setting
- Provide individual and/or group counseling sessions with a focus on but not limited to Social Skills, Restorative Practices, Zones of Regulation, Citizenship, Peace Education, etc.
- Collaborate and consult with staff regarding student concerns and/or student success
- Participate in IEP team meetings and provide required support to students based on IEP goals
- Ensure GWCS is meeting the academic, career and personal/social development of all students
- Encourage teacher/parent communication and community involvement
- Foster a positive, safe, nurturing environment for staff and students
- Provide training and education to staff and parents on topics related to social emotional health and wellness
- Provide crisis intervention on both individual and community levels
- Consult with families and school staff on mental health issues facing individuals and the school community
- Connect families to outside resources when necessary
- Assist students in conflict resolution
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Commitment to GWCS mission and belief that all students can learn
- Considerable knowledge of child growth and development
- Working knowledge of local referral sources
- The ability to communicate effectively with parents
- Demonstrated professionalism and responsibility, and a strong work ethic
- A positive, high-energy attitude, and a drive for personal excellence
- Flexible attitude, ability to work with urgency
- Strong problem solving and strategic thinking skills
- Willingness and desire to participate in unexpected projects
Education and Experience :
- Master's degree in school social work/counseling or related field required
- PA State Certification and Licensure as a School Social Worker in elementary and secondary school required
- Knowledge of urban environments and schools
- Prior experience counseling students
Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as:- Functioning in office space - reaching file cabinets, filing, faxing, scanning, coping, typing, mailing, making phone calls
- Must be able to sit for up to two hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard/mouse and typing
