Job Description
Position Overview:
Parent participation is a core component of this program, which serves families of children with hearing loss. The Parent Trainer will play a critical role in empowering families to support their child's early literacy development through education, modeling, and guided practice. The primary role of this position is to design, deliver, and facilitate engaging bi-weekly parent education seminars that support families in transferring classroom-based literacy skills to the natural home environment. Essential job duties include, but are not limited to: Preparation and Planning Attend a mandatory two-day training class in addition to one team planning/preparation day prior to the start of the child's intervention program Design and facilitate bi-weekly group parent education seminars during the three-week summer program Instruction Provide parents with foundational knowledge of early literacy development, including the reading and writing process outlined in the CRWM summer program Educate families on the importance of active parent participation in shared literacy experiences Coach parents in embedding shared reading and writing activities into daily routines Provide strategies for increasing the use of print-rich materials within the home environment Support culturally and linguistically responsive practices for families whose primary home language is Spanish Collaboration Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team including USC faculty, USC graduate school supervisors, USC graduate students, and parents of child participants Provide daily collaboration, guidance, and mentorship to graduate student participants Collaborate with program instructors and staff to ensure alignment between child instruction and parent education components Assist classroom instructors in overseeing the safety and well-being of children maintaining guidelines established by the USC Office of Youth Protective Services Professional Responsibilities Experience leading parent education or caregiver training programs Strong group facilitation and coaching skills Family-centered and culturally responsive practice Effective communication and instructional modeling Experience designing instructional materials that are engaging and effectiveRequired Qualifications:
Knowledge of speech, language, and literacy development in bilingual or multilingual Deaf/Hard of Hearing children Experience working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing using a variety of hearing technology to listen and speak Effective communication and interpersonal skills Critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity Adaptability and ability to manage multiple tasks Strong lesson planning and organizational skills Reliability and professionalism in a university and clinical outreach setting Cultural competence and sensitivity when working with diverse communities Commitment to community outreach and equity in educationPreferred Qualifications:
Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teaching Credential, Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology, and or Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Certification in Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) or Auditory Verbal Education (AVEd). Experience in a complex medical or academic development setting encouraged. Excellent communication skills- both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications:
Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teaching Credential, Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology, and or Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Certification in Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) or Auditory Verbal Education (AVEd).
