Job Description

Position Description This position with the Granville County Department of Social Services involves advanced social work focused on protecting children at risk of neglect or abuse. Responsibilities include conducting investigations and family assessments, responding to crisis situations, providing counseling and case management services, coordinating with community agencies, maintaining detailed documentation, and participating in court proceedings. The role also serves as the primary on-call worker for Child Welfare Services, handling CPS and APS intake, prevention services, and requests from other counties or states. Work is performed in homes, schools, medical facilities, correctional facilities, and court settings, often involving high-stress and sensitive situations. Strong communication, assessment, crisis intervention, documentation, and decision-making skills are essential, along with knowledge of social work practices, child welfare laws, and community resources.   • Strong knowledge of social work principles, child welfare practices, and abuse/neglect investigations
  • Understanding of federal and state laws, policies, and procedures related to social services
  • Knowledge of family dynamics, behavioral health, and psychosocial treatment approaches
  • Ability to work with resistant, high-risk, or involuntary clients and families
  • Skilled in crisis intervention, risk assessment, and child safety evaluations
  • Experience preparing court reports, case documentation, and treatment plans
  • Ability to testify in court as an expert witness
  • Strong communication, interviewing, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to make critical decisions in stressful and complex situations with limited information
  • Familiarity with community resources and service agencies
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and travel to client locations as needed
Minimum Training:
Master's degree from an accredited school of social work and one (1) year of social work experience; or Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of social work and two (2) years of social work or counseling experience; or Master's degree in a counseling field and two (2) years of social work or counseling experience; or A four-year degree in a human services field or related curriculum and three (3) years of social work or counseling experience; or Graduation from a four-year college or university and four (4) years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling or related human service field providing experience in the techniques of case work, group work, or community organization; or An equivalent combination of training and experience. One year of work experience can be credited for completion of the social work collaborative. A valid driver's license and good driving record are required. Work Schedule-On Call The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, starting at 4:00 PM—and requires flexibility to work evenings, overnights, and holidays as scheduled and on occasion due to shelter duty, projects, and other departmental needs. Hybrid/remote work schedule may be available after successful completion of 1 year of employment.

$57,867.00 - $88,178.00 per year
