Job Description

Elementary School Wellness Specialist Position Summary:
Teen Health Center, Inc. is seeking a compassionate, collaborative, and student-centered Wellness Specialist to support the social, emotional, and behavioral well-being of elementary-aged students within Galveston ISD campuses. The Wellness Specialist will work closely with students, families, teachers, school personnel, and agency therapists to promote healthy social-emotional development, strengthen family engagement, and reduce barriers to student success. This position is embedded within the school setting and focuses on prevention, early intervention, skill-building, consultation, and family support services. The Wellness Specialist serves as a key member of the interdisciplinary school-based wellness team and helps connect students and families with appropriate resources and supports.
The Ideal Candidate Will:
Utilize a strengths-based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approach when working with students and families. Demonstrate an understanding of child development and the unique social-emotional needs of elementary-aged children. Build positive relationships with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners. Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary school-based team. Be dependable, organized, and responsive to the needs of students, families, and school personnel. Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic school environment. Maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards while working with children and families. Be committed to supporting student success through prevention, early intervention, and family engagement efforts. Embrace ongoing professional development and continuous learning. Uphold all HIPAA, FERPA, and agency standards related to confidentiality and student information.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Human Services, Child Development, Education, Public Health, or a related field. Experience working with children and families in educational, behavioral health, social service, healthcare, or community-based settings. Knowledge of child development, social-emotional learning, and positive behavior support strategies. Ability to effectively engage students, caregivers, and school personnel from diverse backgrounds. Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual in English and Spanish. Experience working within school-based programs. Experience facilitating groups with children or adolescents. Experience providing parent education or family support services. Training in trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning, restorative practices, or positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Student Support Services:
Co-facilitate social-emotional learning and skills-based groups alongside agency therapists and school personnel. Provide developmentally appropriate interventions focused on emotional recognition, emotional regulation, coping skills, problem-solving, communication, resilience, and healthy peer relationships. Support students experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, or family-related challenges that may impact school success. Assist with identifying students who may benefit from additional support services and facilitate referrals to agency therapists and other community resources as appropriate. Participate in school-based prevention and wellness initiatives that promote positive student outcomes.
School-Based Collaboration:
Consult and collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, nurses, and other school personnel regarding student social-emotional and behavioral needs. Assist school staff in implementing practical, non-academic strategies that support student engagement, emotional regulation, and positive behavior. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, student support team meetings, and other school-based planning efforts as appropriate. Promote positive behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health outcomes within the school environment.
Family Engagement:
Provide individual and group-based parent education focused on child development, emotional regulation, behavior management, resilience, and family wellness. Support caregivers in understanding and addressing social-emotional and behavioral concerns. Strengthen communication and collaboration between home, school, and community supports. Connect families with agency services and community resources that address identified needs.
Program and Team Participation:
Collaborate closely with Teen Health Center therapists, medical providers, case management staff, school personnel, and community partners. Assist with school-based outreach, prevention programming, and community engagement activities. Participate in staff meetings, trainings, supervision, and professional development opportunities. Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and mission-driven workplace culture.
Documentation and Compliance:
Complete required documentation, referrals, service logs, and reports within established agency timelines. Maintain accurate and timely records in accordance with agency policies and procedures. Adhere to all HIPAA, FERPA, and agency requirements regarding confidentiality and documentation.
Additional Requirements:
Successfully pass all required background checks and clearances for work within Galveston ISD. Maintain reliable transportation for travel between assigned campuses and agency locations as needed. Commit to a minimum 35-hour work week, understanding that occasional schedule flexibility may be required to meet student, family, and program needs. Participate in occasional evening parent education events or school-related activities as needed.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to move throughout a school campus and participate in classroom, playground, cafeteria, and meeting environments. Ability to sit, stand, walk, and engage with students throughout the workday. Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
