Job Description

The purpose of this position is to provide creative and inclusive public programming for youth and families, promote library services, and connect community members to library resources and programs. Most working hours will be spent planning and implementing recreational and educational programs for children aged 0 years to Grade 12 and families at the library. Position does require evening and weekend hours. Position reports to the Youth Services Librarian. Develop and present engaging educational and/or recreational library programming for youth aged 0 years to Grade 12 weekly. Create, post, and distribute flyers, brochures, and other promotional signage using digital graphic design programs monthly. Develop meaningful relationships with families and help build community among program participants. Conduct library tours for school, childcare, homeschool, and other youth groups. Develop bibliographies, pathfinders, and finding aids in support of Readers' Advisory and reference services. Maintain accurate and detailed record of projects and work time, including statistics for programs, correspondence, inventories, and other general office functions. Check online catalog and locate books or resources. Schedule events and programs. Train library youth volunteers. Create and maintain book and program displays. Create online signups for volunteers and patrons. Ensures open spaces in Children's and Young Adult Department are tidy at all times.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Assist with planning and presenting outreach programs at schools, childcares, community events and other local organizations focused on youth and families. Outreach programs and events vary. Create library cards onsite during outreach events. Assist in collaborative projects and events with partnering community groups. Serves on library teams as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Must have excellent customer service skills. Must have knowledge of English language and numbers, including decimal system. Must be able to work with youth of all ages. Must display professional conduct and appearance at all times while performing duties Must be able to organize tasks and communicate effectively with all staff and patrons verbally, by email, and by telephone. Must be able to utilize a computer, Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and possess the ability to use or learn graphic design programs. Must be able to work days, nights, and weekends. Must be able to work outdoors on occasion during outreach events held outside. Must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs and push and pull 100 lbs
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED required. Associate degree in a related field is preferred. Must have a minimum of (1) year of experience working with children or working in a library. Must possess a valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License with a clear driving record. Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate's Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor's Degree. Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree. The City of Tyler supports a policy of a drug and alcohol free workplace. All candidates are subject to pre-employment testing, which may include, but is not limited to, Drug and Alcohol Screenings, Work Fitness Evaluation, Criminal Background Check, and Consumer Report/Credit Check. No person under eighteen (18) years of age will be employed in any regular full-time position. Persons under eighteen (18) years of age may be employed in temporary or regular part-time positions, if they furnish the City with a minor's release (Form 2-2) and are approved by the City Manager. No person under eighteen (18) years of age will be employed in any position requiring the operation of a City motorized vehicle.
