Certification Correctional experience LPC Master's degree Corrections facility medical clinic experience Counseling Mental health counseling Discharge planning LPCC Behavioral health Full Job Description Seeking a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) for a full-time role within a correctional facility in Jefferson County, Alabama. You will play a crucial role in providing mental health services to incarcerated individuals with diverse psychological needs. This position requires a strong commitment to addressing mental health and social issues within a correctional setting and complying with the relevant regulations and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct mental health screenings, intake assessments, and contribute to treatment planning under clinical supervision as applicable. Deliver individual and group counseling using evidence-based approaches; document progress and outcomes accurately in the EHR. Perform suicide risk screenings; implement, monitor, and document suicide-prevention/watch protocols, escalating to a licensed clinician when indicated. Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, and stabilization; coordinate emergent referrals to appropriate licensed or medical staff. Collaborate with medical, nursing, custody, and administration in multidisciplinary case reviews. Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation; comply with HIPAA, facility, and contractual standards. Participate in intake, housing/classification reviews, and special needs referral processes. Coordinate discharge/reentry planning; link patients to community mental health and substance use services. Support quality improvement, training, and audit/compliance activities.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's or master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related behavioral health field from an accredited institution. Meets the state of Alabama's definition of a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP), which includes relevant education and supervised experience in a mental health field. Licensure or certification preferred; candidates working toward licensure under supervision will be considered. Experience providing mental health or behavioral health services, preferably in a correctional, community mental health, or similar environment. Knowledge of mental health assessment, crisis intervention techniques, and basic risk evaluation. Familiarity with social services and community resources available to support inmates' reintegration into the community. Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team in a challenging and dynamic environment. Strong communication, empathy, and conflict-resolution skills. Knowledge of relevant state laws and regulations concerning mental health services in correctional facilities.
