Job Description

Under the direction of management, works as a team to organize, coordinate, oversee and participate in specialized counseling and mental health treatment and services. Mental Health Counselor incumbents work independently in providing psychiatric social services to mental health patients.
FUNCTIONS
Provide an array of outpatient mental health services to promote individualized patient recovery and stabilization. Conduct intakes, individual therapy and a collaborative therapeutic approach if necessary. Develop treatment plans and conduct reviews as needed throughout the duration of treatment. Provide mental health assessments, counseling, referrals, and intervention services. Complete and maintain documentation in a timely and accurate manner and according to Federal, State and Practice guidelines. Write reports to court, school, or other community agencies as necessary Follow up with psychiatrists and/or attending physicians as required. Assures compliance with State regulations, legal requirements and established Trinity Behavioral Health policies and procedures related to mental health services. Evaluates and determines a prospective patient's eligibility for services.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Individual, group, and family therapy techniques; Crisis intervention techniques. Able to make professional evaluations, decisions, and recommendations for treatment planning and implementation Negotiation, persuasion, and investigative techniques. Analytical and assessment skills. Social work theory and practices including mental health treatment concerning values and ethics, human behavior, diagnosis and treatment, assessment, cultural responsibilities, community involvement, and case management. Principles and practices of supervision and training. Psychological principles include test construction, administration and evaluation. Group and individual psychotherapy methods and concepts. Record-keeping techniques. Strong computer literacy skills. Able to work independently and as a positive member of a team. Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with mentally or emotionally disabled persons and their families. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable treating both routine and serious mental health illnesses. Oral and written communication skills. Research methods and report-writing skills. Laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
