Job Description

Are you ready to make a real difference in our community? The Counselor will assist in carrying out the mission and goals of A Better Way Services, Inc. by providing individual and group counseling, education, emotional support sessions, and referrals to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. A Better Way provides shelter and services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, a walk-in Rape Crisis Center, mobile advocacy, individual trauma- informed counseling, support groups, transitional housing, a 24-hour crisis support call and text line for persons in any crisis, education and referrals, bullying, teen dating violence and domestic violence prevention programs, and a check-in call service for older or disabled homebound persons. This position is full-time (40 hours/week) in Muncie, Indiana. The minimum annual salary is $62,000.00.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions. Provide crisis intervention counseling services and intakes over the phone and in-person for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children, including residential and non-residential clients. Offer accurate and timely information and referral to appropriate resources, including, but not limited to, medical services. Conduct individual and group counseling, education, and support sessions with adults. Transport clients and their children as necessary for intakes and other resource delivery. Conduct community presentations on occasion to increase/enhance public awareness and convey the mission of A Better Way, Inc. Document and monitor client progress and data on individual personal action plans and general reporting. Report progress and issues to Shelter Director in a timely manner. Interact with the criminal justice system and community organizations, including, but not limited to providing education on domestic violence and sexual assault. Maintain facility security and client confidentiality at all times. Participate in meetings as appropriate, and communicate effectively, in written form and verbally with staff and clients. Participate in professional development and networking conferences and events as appropriate and/or requested by Shelter Director. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory responsibilities None Work environment Able to stand and/or walk up to 50% of time. Able to sit up to 50% of the time. Able to view a computer monitor for 6-8 hours per day. Some travel and extended hours may be required. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. Education and/or Experience Master's degree in counseling, psychology or related field is required. Six months - two years of experience in serving victims of domestic violence and/or providing other support services is preferred. Exceptional interpersonal skills are necessary as are articulate verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to meet deadlines and excellent time management skills are required, as are timely and accurate documentation skills. Attention to detail and superior organizational skills are a must. Working knowledge of computers and systems is required, including and not limited to, Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (or similar product knowledge). High level of confidentiality and professionalism are required.
