SUD Counselor Job Description - Incarcerated Setting The Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor provides specialized treatment and support to individuals with substance use issues while they are in custody. The role blends clinical counseling focused on addiction, case management services, and coordination with correctional and community resources to promote recovery and reduce recidivism. Core Responsibilities
Assessment & Planning:
Conduct intake screenings, assessments, and develop individualized treatment plans using standardized criteria (e.g., ASAM) to determine care levels and integrate with mental health and SUD programs in the facility.
Counseling Services:
Provide individual and group counseling including psycho-educational sessions, relapse prevention, and medication-assisted treatment support.
Case Management:
Coordinate with clients, families, and agencies to ensure continuity of care, including referrals to community-based treatment and mental health services.
Crisis Intervention:
Provide immediate support during crises, working with the treatment team and jail staff to ensure safety and stability.
Discharge & Aftercare:
Assist with planning for post-release integration, including connecting clients with reentry programs and community resources.
Compliance & Documentation:
Maintain HIPAA-compliant records, follow state/federal regulations, and document all client interactions and interventions.
Specialized Skills:
Facilitate evidence-based practices and apply harm-reduction and patient-centered approaches. Work Environment
- On-site at Fayette County Detention Center, Full-time position. Hours can be flexible based on the current need of the program and employee.
- Requires strong communication, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work with diverse populations, including those with co-occurring mental health issues.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including medical and behavioral health staff, custody officers, and community agencies. Qualifications
CSW, LCSW, LPCA, LPCC, LCADC, LADC, CADC
- Experience with incarcerated populations, SUD treatment preferred.
- Proficiency in evidence-based practices, crisis intervention, and case management.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and work in high-stress environments.
