General Statement of Duties:
The Staff Assistant/Counselor is part of a team of professionals responsible for administering and delivering mental health services to students of Worcester State University. This is a ten-month position, paid over twelve months, with 9 weeks off between June and August each year.
Responsibilities:
(E) = Essential (E) Provide mental health services including, individual and group counseling services, safety assessments and planning, to a diverse population of students. (E) Provide necessary case management services to ensure utilization of both on campus and off campus support systems as needed. (E) Assist in the implementation of mental health outreach to the university community to include classroom presentations, faculty training, as well as other innovative outreach activities. (E) Provide BASICS- Brief Alcohol Screening student alcohol incidents as needed. (E) Provide academic support as it relates to student mental health needs and facilitate on campus referrals to academic support services. (E) Participate in committees, professional development and research. (E) Participate in departmental strategic planning development. (E) Work on occasional nights and weekends as requested. (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students. (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan. (E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives. (E) Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
Minimum Master's Degree in counseling, social work or related field from an accredited institution. Must be eligible for independent licensure in the state of MA as an
LICSW, LMHC, LMFT. A
minimum of two years of experience providing crisis intervention and direct clinical services to a diverse population. Ability to de-escalate crises, conduct safety assessments and implement safety planning. Personality and general attitude compatible with those whom they are to be associated with. Ability to express self in oral and written communication. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to successfully pass a thorough background and CORI check.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of Higher Education principles, practices, and procedures. Prior experience in a college/university counseling center. Experience contributing to the diversity and inclusivity of prior work environments. Knowledge of BIPOC, First Generation and LGBTQIA+ population risk factors and experience providing clinical treatment to these populations. Experience working with and providing clinical treatment to those with substance use disorders. Bilingual in Spanish.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time (10-month), benefited, exempt, APA position. The firm annual salary range for this position is $58,000- $65,000, commensurate with relevant professional experience and education. There is a 9-week non-service period that runs from June- August. The anticipated start date for this position is July 27, 2026.
