AFSCME 2733 Unit A JOB SUMMARY The Youth Peer Support Specialist (YPSS) will act as a support and resource for youth with serious emotional disturbances (SED) who are receiving services in the behavioral health system. The YPSS act as a key member of the treatment team by working with youth one on one or in group, supporting them in achieving goals through d activities and interventions. YPSSs will support youth empowerment by assisting youth in developing skills to improve their overall functioning and quality of life and working collaboratively with others involved in delivering the youth's care.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Essential Duties:

Attend all required trainings to enhance skills and meet agency guidelines and as required by the Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), and other agencies governing the operation of the agency. Build and foster relationships with the youth and families and others working with the youth Actively engage as a part of the treatment team to meet youth needs,plete all required documentation and paperwork Prepare the youth to fully participate in their own meetings and treatment planning process (including Wraparound, Family Centered Planning meetings (IPOS) IEP meetings, etc.) Teach self-advocacy, problem solving and independent living skills Provide support during "rough" or "crisis times" Providemunity education about youth culture and perspective Interrupt bias and promote a stance of acceptance while reducing stigma about mental health Empower the youth to build understanding in others about their unique mental health needs In collaboration with the youth, work with other internal and external partners (i.e. schools, faithmunity, other human serviceanizations) to develop natural supports to eliminate barriers to services, enhance existingmunity services or develop new services based on the needs of the youth Co-facilitate groups of youth focusing on goals as specified in treatment plan Provide consultation and education to individuals and groups and use problem solving techniques with the objective of assisting youth in improving or maintaining functioning Serve as a role model and active participant in supporting youth in meeting their treatment plan goals Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor

Organizational Development:

Fosters and promotes theanization's mission, vision and goals. Demonstrates alignment with theanization's vision and mission. Participates in continuing education activities to further enhancement of services. Represents the agency in themunity in a manner that fosters understanding of the mental health needs of consumers and the goals/mission of theanization Other duties may be assigned by the Health Services Supervisor dependent on program needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including aputer, vision to read ed materials and aputer monitor, and hearing and speech sufficient tomunicate in person or over the telephone. May require a moderate to extensive amount of walking and working outdoors during all weather conditions. EDUCATION

Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

Special Medicaid YPSS Age Qualifications/ Bona Fide Occupational Qualification:

Youth Peer Support is a Medicaid State Plan service described in the Michigan Medicaid Provider Manual in the Mental Health- Substance Abuse Chapter in Section 17.3.G.3 Peer Delivered or Operated Support. Youth Peer Support Specialists must be: Young adult, ages 18 through 26, with lived experience who received mental health services as a youth. Willing and able to self-identify as a person who has or is receiving behavioral health services and is prepared to use that experience in helping others Experience receiving services as a youth inplex, child serving systems preferred (behavioral health, child welfare, juvenile justice, special education, etc.) Employed by PIHP/CMHSP or its contract providers. Trained in the MDHHS approved curriculum and ongoing training model.
