On-site clinical services are available seven days per week. The Bergen County Jail currently houses about 200 inmates who are identified as having significant mental health issues. Clinicians screen every inmate for mental health / substance use issues and subsequent vulnerability to incarceration. Inmates who require follow up services are managed throughout their stay at the jail. Inmates with acute needs are placed in specially designated housing units and are monitored according to need. Responsibilities The Clinician will be responsible for providing strengths-based services to ensure engagement, assessment, care planning development and implementation, and monitoring of assigned clients. Through a collaborative effort with the team, the Clinician will coordinate and advocate for services that will promote optimal outcomes and reduce the usage of the emergency department and inpatient hospital stays. As part of the Mental Health team, the Clinician, under the direction of The Director of Behavioral Health Services, has responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:
  • Making thorough mental health / substance use assessments upon incarceration
  • Completing suicidal assessments and determining appropriate plan for care
  • Providing referrals to in-house and post-release community programs / services
  • Collaborate with other Mental Health team members to facilitate the delivery of services to the patient population from incarceration to the community
  • Participating in meetings, trainings, and unit activities
  • Providing professional individual and group therapy services
  • Maintaining essential case documentation, as required
  • Establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with professionals both inside and outside the jail Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field is required
  • Must have a valid New Jersey license, in good standing (LSW, LCSW, LAC, or LPC)
  • LCADC also preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working in a healthcare setting
  • Experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness involved with the Criminal Justice System preferred
  • Strong communication skills required along with outstanding project management skills
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, in a fast-paced environment
  • Bilingual preferred.
