We have opportunities to work with people who have co-occurring mental illness and Substance Use Disorders. Function of the
Co-Occurring Therapist/Counselor:
LMFT, LCPC, LCSW, LADC
Healthy Minds works with over 10 Specialty Court programs in delivering co-occurring mental health and substance abuse services to non-violent offenders. We help clients break the cycle of substance abuse and criminal behavior by implementing evidence-based practices. Specifically, we implement the Matrix Intensive Outpatient Treatment Model, Hazelden's Treatment for Co-Occurring Disorders, as well as trauma and recovery. We also implement Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) when treating mental illness. If you are not trained or certified in these areas, don't worry! We compensate staff for attending professional-level trainings. Healthy Minds maintains low client/therapist ratios to allow for ~25 patient contact hours/week to minimize burnout and afford therapists the time to do the work necessary outside of psychotherapy to meet biopsychosocial needs while involved in Specialty Courts. Therapists implement evidence-based treatment modalities by incorporating a biopsychosocial perspective that cover clients' history, risk factors, unmet needs (i.e., physiological, psychological, sociological, criminogenic, educational, vocational), as well as DSM diagnostic criteria. From intake to discharge, they match the intensity of interventions to clients' risk factors, target criminogenic needs (e.g., substance abuse, antisocial traits, peer groups), and tailor interventions to clients' culture, abilities, and health needs. We also strongly encourage family involvement in treatment because it improves outcomes and reduces recidivism. Therapists must complete a comprehensive diagnostic assessment using the six ASAM dimensions as the basis for recommending level of care and treatment planning. Treatment and discharge planning are listed together because discharge planning always begins at admission.Job-Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Solid intakes involve multiple sources of information and collaboration with clients, families, and collaterals. Please do this when possible and clinically appropriate.
- Know when it's time to focus on rapport instead of information gathering.
- You must be able to transform psychosocial and diagnostic information into a clinical treatment plan with time-limited, realistic, measurable objectives upon opening a case and on an ongoing basis with treatment plan updates.
- You don't have to document in the office, but you do have to finish all of this week's documentation by Monday next week. (We have electronic medical records to accommodate your Hawaii travel.)
- Weekly attendance of clinical group consultation meetings is required so you can confer with your teammates and eventually know everything.
- Be prepared for the challenge of increasing competency in court-involved work that involves special confidentiality arrangements with Court staff, deferring to Court staff to approve treatment recommendations, and collaboration with the legal system to address clients' criminogenic and healthcare needs.
