Job Description

Student Assistance Program Counselors Integrity. Resilience. Compassion. Resourcefulness. Discernment. These are among the qualities we seek in Student Assistance Counselors who will model these characteristics as they provide prevention education and brief interventions with students in Claremont, NH or South Royalton, VT. Second Growth is seeking qualified candidates to fill several openings for Student Assistance Program Counselors who enjoy working with students and have the appropriate education and experience to fill these roles. Second Growth will provide training to prepare staff for this rewarding and consequential work. SAP Counselors will support students in many ways through prevention education, conflict resolution, behavioral supports, brief interventions, and by addressing risk factors related to bullying and substance misuse. In collaboration with school staff and district administrators, SAP Counselors will provide school-wide prevention education, individual and group support for students, and consult with school staff, parents, and caregivers. Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and credentials.
Responsibilities:
  • The selected candidates will fill part-time or full-time positions in local schools during the academic year, and will work in our Youth Programs during the summer.
  • Provide prevention education in group or classroom settings on a regular basis. Classes may be related to social-emotional learning, healthy habits, prevention education around bullying or substance misuse, and other important and topical issues.
  • Provide age-appropriate supportive services to students in grades 6 through 12. Issues addressed may include behaviors, relationships, and prevention education topics.
  • Work with faculty and staff to coordinate and provide education and support for students.
  • Facilitate a variety of groups as needed.
  • Conduct surveys, provide evidence-based interventions, and/or refer students to external providers as needed.
  • Maintain secure, complete, accurate, and non-identifiable data for reports to grant funders, administrators, or to fulfill state, local, or school requirements.
  • Attend regular/periodic student support team meetings with school staff for review of students and to plan appropriate interventions.
  • Participate in community and school-based events such as open house, parent's night, prevention coalition meetings, and other appropriate gatherings
  • Regularly attend supervision facilitated by Second Growth and in the company of other practitioners, to gain perspective, advice, and for problem solving.
The selected candidates will have a clinical license or certification, or will take steps to acquire the appropriate professional license or certification within the first year of employment. Experience working in a school setting and with at-risk youth is preferred.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in psychology, sociology, education, or other related field. Master's degree is a plus and will be compensated accordingly.
  • Licensed as a Mental Health Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist, Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Social Worker, or Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS).
  • If not otherwise licensed as a social worker or therapist, Second Growth will support candidate to acquire CPS within two years of employment.
  • Successful candidates will be mission driven, organized, self-directed, articulate, enjoy working with youth, and will possess integrity, resilience, compassion, resourcefulness, discernment, and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Candidates will be eager to seek out opportunities to get to know students within the school setting.
  • Second Growth will conduct criminal background checks, licensing verification, and will check references for all positions.
