Job Description

Job Overview We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Substance Abuse Professional Counselor (SUDP) to join our mental health and addiction treatment team. The ideal candidate will provide comprehensive counseling services to individuals struggling with substance use disorders, supporting their recovery journey through evidence-based practices. This role involves conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and delivering both individual and group therapy sessions in a clinical outpatient setting. The counselor will work closely with the internal clinical team, including FCS staff and peer support specialists, as well as community and healthcare partners to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care. Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial and diagnostic assessments, including intake interviews and ASAM Criteria placement assessments, and document diagnoses using
DSM-5/ICD-10-CM
in alignment with Washington State SUDP scope of practice and HCA documentation requirements. Develop individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient's clinical needs, goals, and level of care. Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions using evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and other behavioral health strategies. Provide crisis intervention and support for patients experiencing acute substance-related or co-occurring behavioral health crises. Deliver family and child-involved counseling when appropriate to strengthen the patient's recovery support system. Maintain timely, accurate, and complete clinical documentation and progress notes in compliance with HIPAA and agency standards. Monitor patient progress through ongoing assessments, data collection, and evaluation of treatment effectiveness. Follow all billing and documentation protocols, including proper use of
CPT/HCPCS
codes when applicable. Engage in continuing education and professional development related to substance use treatment, behavioral health, and best practices in addiction counseling. Skills Proven experience in substance use disorder counseling or behavioral health treatment settings. Strong knowledge of Motivational Interviewing (MI), crisis intervention strategies, and other evidence-based SUD counseling techniques. Excellent patient engagement skills with a focus on individual counseling, group facilitation, and case management. Familiarity with behavioral therapy approaches commonly used in SUD treatment (e.g., CBT-based strategies, relapse prevention, coping-skills training). Proficiency in clinical documentation standards, including HIPAA compliance, DSM-5/ICD-10 coding, CPT/HCPCS documentation, and progress-tracking methods. Strong communication skills for completing intake assessments, documenting patient progress, and collaborating with interdisciplinary care teams. Ability to effectively manage crisis situations while maintaining professionalism and therapeutic rapport.
