6/10/2026 SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Directors for TMH Consult Service and Brown University Health Recovery Center, evaluates, diagnoses, and treats a wide range of psychosocial problems, applying individual clinical social work skills in order to assist patients and their families and the resolution of personal and environmental problems, attributable to mental or physical illness, which prevents them from achieving her highest level of psychosocial functioning. RESPONSIBILITIES
Completes comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to determine stage of change regarding substance use and appropriate level of care. Collaborate with the primary care team for behavioral health expertise and guidance on viable treatment options, MOUD initiation, and provide resources at discharge. Provide education to patients and loved ones regarding impact of substance use on patient's health to aid in increasing motivation to change. Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team to formulate comprehensive care planning for patients presenting with substance use disorders and at times with co-morbid psychiatric stressors and respond to crisis intervention needs of patients. This may involve referral to community agencies and obtaining resources for those patients who require a higher level of care. Arrange referrals for patients presenting with acuity needs higher than outpatient level of care. Develops treatment plans, provides clinical intervention, utilizing individual and group treatment modalities, and analyzes course and results of treatment. As relevant to clinical assignment, remains current on available community resources, and accesses them as needed. Offer flexible walk-in hours to offer patients rapid access to treatment. Facilitate and/or co-facilitate groups that are based in Cognitive-behavioral therapy, Relapse prevention, Motivational interviewing, and acceptance and commitment therapy/mindfulness-based interventions. Collaborate and coordinate with Psych CL colleagues regarding shared cases; provide additional assessments and assistance with referrals as indicated. Participates in the development of the addiction service programs across Brown University Health. Provide educational opportunities and related support to MSW interns during their academic year; collaborate with learner's educational facility and complete associated tasks. Contribute and facilitate education to Addiction Medicine Fellows, Residents and Medical Students through case discussions and modeling. Maintains and enhances professional expertise through appropriate educational activities. May attend training for specific areas of clinical responsibility.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BASIC KNOWLEDGE
Master's degree in Social Work and licensed through the RI Department of Health as a LICSW and/or LCDP (Licensed Chemical Dependency Professional). Must be eligible for credentialing to provide independent psychotherapy, both individual and family. Training and experience necessary to address the specific needs of the patients served in assigned area of responsibility including general medical population with behavioral health needs. Analytical and therapy skills necessary to evaluate patients, develop treatment plans, initiate therapy and evaluate results. Ability to effectively interact with patients, families, medical staff and outside agencies in providing services.
EXPERIENCE
At least one year of clinical experience in general mental health counseling and addiction treatment.
INDEPENDENT ACTION
Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to program manager or his designee, where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
