Job Description
The Child Care Staff is responsible for providing direct supervision, support, and therapeutic engagement to youth residing in a DBHDS-licensed Children's Mental Health Therapeutic Group Home. This role ensures a safe, structured, and trauma-informed environment while implementing individualized service plans (ISPs) and supporting residents in developing emotional, behavioral, and independent living skills. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Supervision & Safety Provide continuous supervision of residents to ensure safety and compliance with program rules. Maintain awareness of residents' whereabouts and activities at all times. Implement crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques in accordance with agency policy and DBHDS regulations. Monitor for and report any incidents, injuries, or behavioral concerns promptly. Therapeutic Support Assist in the implementation of Individualized Service Plans (ISPs), treatment goals, and behavioral interventions. Utilize trauma-informed care and evidence-based strategies when interacting with youth. Support residents in developing coping skills, emotional regulation, and appropriate social behaviors. Facilitate and/or assist with group activities, life skills training, and therapeutic programming. Daily Living Support Provide guidance and supervision for activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene, grooming, meal preparation, and housekeeping. Model appropriate behavior, communication, and problem-solving skills. Encourage independence while providing necessary structure and support. Documentation & Communication Complete accurate and timely documentation, including daily progress notes, incident reports, and shift logs. Communicate effectively with supervisors, clinicians, and team members regarding resident progress and concerns. Participate in team meetings, trainings, and case reviews as required. Transportation & Appointments Transport residents to school, medical appointments, therapy sessions, and community activities as needed. Ensure all transportation is conducted safely and in compliance with agency policies. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required (Bachelor's degree in Human Services or related field preferred). Experience working with children/adolescents with behavioral or mental health needs preferred. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. Ability to pass background checks in accordance with Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services requirements. Required Skills and Competencies Knowledge of trauma-informed care and behavioral management techniques. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to remain calm and effective in crisis situations. Team-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities. Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality. Certifications & Training Requirements CPR/First Aid Certification (will provide upon hire). Crisis intervention training (will provide upon hire). Medication administration training (will provide upon hire). Completion of all required DBHDS trainings and annual competencies. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, and actively supervise youth for extended periods. Ability to intervene in crisis situations, including potential physical intervention (as trained). Ability to lift up to 50 pounds if necessary. Work includes evenings, weekends, and holidays as part of a rotating schedule. Additional Expectations Adhere to all agency policies, procedures, and DBHDS licensing standards. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and state regulations. Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and ethical conduct at all times.
Pay:
