Chaplains facilitate spiritual well-being by assisting patients, families, staff and the wider community to cope and identify sources of meaning and hope in their experience of life transitions, inclusive of suffering, loss and grief, by drawing upon their values and beliefs in the context of their life story.When on-call:
chaplain provides for the spiritual needs of patients and families with medical emergencies that occur outside staff chaplain's regular hours. The chaplain will cover weekends on a rotation bases. The chaplain will respond to the pager immediately. He or she may stay overnight at the hospital but is not required to do so. However, he or she must be able to arrive within 30 minutes. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.Other information:
Required Job Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in: Theology, Pastoral Studies, Religion, Divinity, Pastoral Counseling, NACC, APC or NAJC Board Certification or eligible to apply for certification
- Ecclesiastical Endorsement or Pastor's Letter of good standing.
- Completed Clinical Pastoral Education, Level I & II
- Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Self-reflective, well-grounded in a relationship with God, self/others.
- Spiritual and emotional maturity reflected in self-awareness and ability to use strengths and limitations effectively in ministry.
- Demonstration of ability to articulate medical/ethical issues.
- Resourceful in knowing how culture, ethnicity and religious beliefs impact an individual's suffering and healing.
- Integrity an identity that respects all faith traditions. Sensitivity to cultural, religious and ethnic diversity.
- Strong spiritual assessment capabilities. Ability to articulate a pastoral theology that is both contemporary and functional.
- Serves as an effective member of the interdisciplinary team.
- Utilizes systems thinking. Strong communication skills with an ability to actively listen and respond utilizing immediacy skills.
- Ability to relate to others and to build and utilize peer relationships for the purpose of support and clarification.
- Ability to function effectively under stress, to cope with crisis situations and to respond creatively to a multiplicity of challenges.
- An awareness of, and an ability to articulate the ways in which their feelings, attitudes, values and assumptions affect their ministries.
- Ability to reflect theologically and facilitate that process in others.
Responsibilities:
- Provides spiritual services to patients, families and staff
- Participates in on-call and provides on-call spiritual crisis intervention to patients, families and staff.
- Facilitates with others their search for meaning in the experience of life transitions, inclusive of, but not limited to suffering, loss and grief. Helps others apply their own values in decision-making.
- Participates in IDT meetings & on hospital committees; taking leadership as appropriate.
- Documents in EMR spiritual assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation with all patients.
- Responds to patient's needs in a holistic manner consistent with the person's age and developmental level.
- Intervenes in chronic and acute situations with an ability to prioritize and problem solve.
- Provides for the sacramental & spiritual services needs of patients, family members and staff.
- Works with parish ministers and pastors for the good of the patient and family members when indicated or as appropriate.
- Participates in ongoing educational opportunities e.g., supervision, conferences or courses.
- Contributes to meeting the fluctuating staffing needs of the Department as evidenced by flexibility in own assignments and work schedules.
