Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The primary task of all staff of Mentor United Methodist Church (Mentor UMC) is to support the work and ministry of the congregation in its efforts to fulfill the Church's mission to lead all onto a path of Christ-centered discipleship. The Minister of Congregational Care (MOCC) will be a committed disciple of Jesus Christ and model the love of Christ. The MOCC will assure that care ministry is provided to members and friends of Mentor UMC with primary focus on the homebound, those in nursing care facilities and/or facing transitional issues. The MOCC will assist the pastoral staff with hospital coverage. The MOCC will also oversee the continuing development of our Caring Servant ministry so that laity are equipped and empowered for ministry. The MOCC will work with coworkers, congregation members, volunteers and other Mentor UMC leaders, as well as contribute to a positive working atmosphere in a team-based setting that supports the Church's mission.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS & WORK HOURS
The MOCC will faithfully serve out their call and giftedness, contributing to a team-based environment and agree with and share the mission, vision, and goals of Mentor UMC. The MOCC will work with the Pastoral Staff, Church Staff, and SPRC to help support and enhance the mission of Mentor UMC. The Minister of Congregational Care is accountable to and evaluated by the Lead Pastor and Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). This is a part-time position; 13 - 17 hours per week, with an average of 15 hours per week. The Minister of Congregational Care will minister in partnership with the pastoral staff and trained Caring Servant volunteers. If absences or unexpected events should be for an extended time, the Chairperson of the Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee shall be notified as soon as possible.DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The MOCC will fulfill the following responsibilities in a part-time capacity: Pastoral & Relational Care Provides excellent relational and spiritual care to congregants and community members, including visitation of the homebound, local hospital and nursing home visits (when requested), and conducting funeral services. Be present on Sunday mornings for worship and fellowship for building relationships at least once per month. Caring Servant Development Equips and empowers lay volunteers to become Caring Servants by providing training in best-practice care techniques and offering ongoing monitoring and oversight to ensure quality care is delivered. Staff Collaboration Participates in regular meetings with pastoral staff to remain current on congregational needs and staff priorities, demonstrating a consistent commitment to collaborative, mission-focused ministry. Volunteer Coordination Works alongside and utilizes Caring Servant volunteers as an extension of the congregational care ministry. Preaching Support Assists with the preaching rotation on an occasional basis as needed.SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Understanding of United Methodist polity Relevant experience in a church, hospital, or ministry setting, including familiarity with hospital visitation protocols and a commitment to confidentiality Commitment to collaborative, creative, and innovative ministry Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills • Computer proficiency Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with diverse theological and political perspectives Compassionate demeanor with the ability to provide pastoral care to those in need Comfortable praying with and for others Comfortable serving communion that has been consecrated by one of our pastors (if not ordained)PREFERRED
