This role focuses on developing a vibrant, Christ-centered youth ministry that engages students, equips them in their faith, and integrates them into the life of the church. The Youth Minister / Youth Ministry Coordinator works closely with pastoral staff, volunteers, families, and regional ministry partners to cultivate a growing and impactful youth ministry aligned with the mission of First Baptist Church. If a candidate is currently enrolled in an academic institution and needs a youth ministry-related internship as part of their educational program, First Baptist Church may be able to structure this role in a way that supports academic credit requirements in coordination with the student's institution. Mission Statement The vision of First Baptist Church is that the middle and high school students who are part of this ministry would come to faith in Jesus Christ, grow as faithful disciples, and become active participants in the life and mission of the church. The purpose of the youth ministry is to embrace the Great Commission as it relates to middle and high school students by helping them know Christ, follow Him faithfully, and live out their faith in everyday life. The Staff of First Baptist Church engages in mutual prayer and personal respect; has a commitment to be open to God's will; and encourages the growth of Christ's Kingdom on Earth through the Ministries of First Baptist Church of Portland, Oregon. Key Responsibilities 1. Spiritual Leadership & Discipleship
  • Develop and deliver weekly Bible teaching that is relevant, engaging, and rooted in Scripture.
  • Provide pastoral care to students through mentoring, counseling, prayer, and relational connection
  • Foster spiritual growth and Christ-like living among youth 2. Program Leadership
  • Lead and oversee the weekly Youth Group gathering
  • Plan and execute monthly youth events and activities
  • Supervise games, activities, and overall program flow
  • Ensure proper setup and cleanup for all youth events 3. Curriculum Development
  • Develop or select a comprehensive 4-year teaching curriculum aligned with the high school cycle
  • Submit curriculum annually by August 15th to be reviewed and approval by pastoral staff and Diaconate Board.
  • Ensure teaching aligns with the theological direction of First Baptist Church 4. Volunteer Development
  • Recruit, train, and lead a team of adult volunteers
  • Ensure all adult volunteers have passed FBC background check before submitting for approval by XP.
  • Equip volunteers to: o Mentor and disciple students o Provide pastoral support o Assist in program leadership and activities 5. Relational & Family Engagement
  • Build meaningful relationships with students and their families
  • Maintain regular communication through text, email, and social platforms
  • Create a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for all youth 6. Regional & Partnership Engagement
  • Collaborate with ABCCPC Youth Pastors and the J.13 Regional Youth Mission
  • Participate in and help lead: o Youth events o Mission trips o Regional ministry initiatives
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with other churches 7. Camps & Special Programs
  • Promote and support participation in Camp Arrah Wanna programs
  • Assist families with registration and preparation
  • Participate in camp leadership as needed 8. Safety & Accountability
  • Ensure strict adherence to the "2-adult rule" in all youth settings
  • Maintain a safe and respectful environment
  • Report any concerns (including potential abuse) to appropriate leadership and authorities Time Commitment (Up to 10 hours/week)
  • Sunday involvement (Youth presence & church participation)
  • Weekly Youth Group leadership
  • Event planning and execution
  • Volunteer coordination and meetings
  • Outreach and relational engagement
  • Administrative and preparation time Qualifications Required
  • A committed follower of Jesus Christ with a clear calling to youth ministry
  • Demonstrates spiritual maturity and Christ-like character
  • Ability to connect relationally with youth and families
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Team-oriented and collaborative Preferred
  • Experience in youth ministry within a church setting
  • Experience leading volunteers
  • Biblical or ministry training (formal or in progress)
  • Experience working in diverse or urban ministry environments Personal Qualities
  • A heart for students and their spiritual growth
  • Relational, approachable, and engaging
  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • Able to lead in both structured and dynamic environments
  • Committed to the mission and vision of First Baptist Church Reporting Relationship
  • Reports directly to the Senior/Lead Pastor
  • Works collaboratively with pastoral staff and ministry teams
