Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • May establish periods for worship, conducts religious services, and administers rites and sacraments;
  • May provide pastoral care in order to develop good relationships with all who are served, with particular attention to those newly admitted to the facility;
  • May counsel individuals going through an emotional and spiritual crisis, the critically ill, the dying, and/or those about to be released, on personal and spiritual problems;
  • May conduct a religious education program through planning and organizing instructional classes, group discussions, forums, broadcasts, and group music programs;
  • May work closely with all departmental staff and community-based organizations to further the rehabilitation of individuals admitted to a State facility;
  • May speak before community and other groups on the program(s) of the assigned facility(ies);
  • May consult with the facility head and other chaplains on the coordination of the religious program and its relationship with the overall functions of the facility;
  • May aid in selecting religious books and equipment for purchase and to be donated;
  • May maintain records of religious activities;
  • May recruit volunteers to assist with different faiths;
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsCandidates must possess ecclesiastical endorsement from the official endorsing agency of the Chaplain's faith or denomination at the time of appointment and maintain such endorsement for the duration of their employment. Additional CommentsOASAS Addiction Treatment Centers (ATCs) are Tobacco Free Facilities.
Background Investigation Requirements:
Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC) that includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee's employment application may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
