Job Description

Worship Pastor Job Description Gateway Church in Spring, TX is seeking a Worship Pastor to lead our worship ministry. The Worship Pastor is responsible for leading, developing, and overseeing the worship ministry of the church in a way that glorifies God, supports the mission of the church, and encourages the congregation to worship both personally and corporately. This role will primarily lead a contemporary worship service while remaining grounded in biblical truth and the spiritual formation of the church body. The Worship Pastor should be a spiritually mature leader, skilled musician, team builder, and shepherd who can plan and lead worship services that are Christ-centered, theologically sound, engaging, and excellent in quality. This person will work closely with the Lead Pastor to create worship services that support the sermon, church calendar, and overall vision of the church. Primary Responsibilities Worship Leadership The Worship Pastor will lead the congregation in worship through music, prayer, Scripture, and spiritual leadership. This includes selecting songs that are biblically faithful, theologically rich, and appropriate for a contemporary worship setting.
Responsibilities include:
Plan and lead weekly worship services. Select songs that align with the sermon theme, church doctrine, and spiritual needs of the congregation. Lead worship vocally and instrumentally as needed. Encourage congregational participation rather than performance-centered worship. Maintain a worship style that is modern, contemporary, and accessible to a multi-generational church body. Incorporate Scripture, prayer, and moments of reflection into worship gatherings. Ensure that all worship elements point people toward Christ and support the preaching of God's Word. Service Planning The Worship Pastor will work closely with the Lead Pastor and ministry staff to plan meaningful, organized, and spiritually focused services.
Responsibilities include:
Meet regularly with the Lead Pastor to discuss sermon direction, service themes, and upcoming ministry needs. Plan the order of service for Sunday gatherings and special services. Coordinate worship elements such as music, Scripture readings, baptism, Lords Supper, prayer filled moments, and special services. Prepare worship plans in advance and communicate them clearly to all team members. Help create smooth transitions between service elements. Maintain sensitivity to the Holy Spirit while also valuing preparation, structure, and excellence. Worship Team Development The Worship Pastor is responsible for recruiting, training, discipling, and shepherding worship team members.
Responsibilities include:
Recruit and develop vocalists, musicians, band members, and worship volunteers. Lead regular rehearsals with excellence, preparation, and spiritual focus. Provide coaching and feedback to team members in a gracious and constructive way. Build a healthy worship team culture marked by humility, unity, preparation, and spiritual maturity. Disciple worship team members and encourage them to grow in both musical skill and personal walk with Christ. Set clear expectations for team participation, attendance, preparation, lifestyle, and spiritual leadership. Develop future worship leaders within the church as the Lord provides. Musical Direction The Worship Pastor should provide musical leadership for a contemporary worship environment.
Responsibilities include:
Arrange songs for the band and vocal team as needed. Lead rehearsals with clear musical direction. Ensure musical excellence without allowing perfectionism to overshadow worship. Maintain appropriate keys, tempos, arrangements, and transitions for congregational singing. Use worship planning tools, chord charts, tracks, click tracks, or multitrack as appropriate. Stay current with modern worship music while carefully evaluating songs for biblical accuracy and congregational usefulness. Balance newer worship songs with familiar songs and hymns when appropriate. Technical and Production Oversight The Worship Pastor may oversee or work closely with the audio, video, lighting, and livestream teams to ensure worship services are done with excellence.
Responsibilities include:
Coordinate with sound, media, lighting, projection, and livestream staff/ volunteers. Ensure lyrics, slides, and media are accurate and prepared before services. Help train and support technical volunteers. Work toward high-quality sound and visual presentation without distracting from worship. Maintain equipment related to worship ministry, including instruments, microphones, sound gear, stage equipment, and worship software. Communicate technical needs clearly and in advance. Spiritual Leadership The Worship Pastor is not only a musician but also a pastor and spiritual leader.
Responsibilities include:
Model a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Live a life consistent with biblical standards and church leadership expectations. Support and affirm the church's Baptist beliefs, mission, values, and leadership. Shepherd worship team members spiritually, not just musically. Pray regularly for the worship ministry, church leadership, congregation, and services. Help cultivate a church culture of worship beyond Sunday morning. Participate in the life of the church through worship attendance, ministry involvement, and pastoral support. Special Services and Events The Worship Pastor will help lead and coordinate worship for special services and church-wide events.
Responsibilities may include:
Christmas services Easter services Night of Worship Revival services Funerals or weddings, as requested Student, children's, or family worship events Church conferences, retreats, or outreach events The Worship Pastor should be flexible and willing to support the broader ministry needs of the church. Administrative Responsibilities The Worship Pastor will manage the organizational needs of the worship ministry.
Responsibilities include:
Create worship schedules for musicians, vocalists, and technical volunteers. Maintain clear communication with team members. Manage worship ministry budget in cooperation with church leadership. Oversee song libraries, chord charts, worship software, and licensing needs. Ensure compliance with copyright and music licensing requirements such as CCLI. Attend staff meetings, planning meetings, and leadership meetings as requested. Evaluate and improve worship ministry systems as needed. Qualifications Spiritual Qualifications The ideal candidate should: Be a follower of Jesus Christ. Demonstrate spiritual maturity and a lifestyle consistent with Scripture. Affirm the church's statement of faith and Baptist doctrine. Be committed to the authority of Scripture. Have a heart for worship, discipleship, evangelism, and the local church. Display humility, teachability, integrity, and servant leadership. Be willing to become an active member of the church, if required. Musical Qualifications The ideal candidate should: Be a skilled vocalist and musician, preferably with guitar and/or piano ability. Have experience leading modern/contemporary worship. Be able to lead a band with confidence and clarity. Understand basic music theory, arrangements, keys, tempos, and transitions. Be familiar with current worship music and modern worship practices. Have the ability to lead both rehearsals and live worship services effectively. Leadership Qualifications The ideal candidate should: Have experience recruiting, training, and leading volunteers. Be able to shepherd people, not simply manage tasks. Communicate clearly and respectfully. Work well with pastors, staff, volunteers, and church members. Be organized, dependable, and self-motivated. Handle feedback and conflict with grace and maturity. Support the overall vision and direction of the Lead Pastor and church leadership. Preferred Experience Previous experience serving as a Worship Pastor, Worship Leader, or Music Minister. Experience in a Baptist church or similar evangelical church setting. Familiarity with Planning Center, ProPresenter, CCLI, multitrack, click tracks, or similar tools. Experience leading a contemporary worship band. Experience planning services in partnership with pastoral leadership. Ability to lead traditional hymns in a modern style when appropriate. Basic knowledge of audio, video, livestream, and stage production. Personal Characteristics The Worship Pastor should be: Christ-centered, Biblically grounded, spiritually mature, humble, dependable, team player, relational, organized, encouraging, Pastorally minded, and committed to excellence without being performance-driven. Expectations The Worship Pastor will be expected to: Faithfully attend and participate in church services and activities. Support the Lead Pastor and overall vision of the church. Prepare thoroughly for worship services and rehearsals. Maintain a healthy and respectful worship team culture. Lead worship in a way that encourages congregational singing. Communicate clearly with staff, volunteers, and church leadership. Must have a desire to see the congregation grow spiritually and numerically. Continued personal growth spiritually, musically, and professionally. Represent the church well both publicly and privately. Work Schedule The Worship Pastor's schedule may include: Sunday morning worship services Weekly rehearsals Staff meetings Worship planning meetings Special services and events Volunteer development meetings Personal preparation and administrative work Some evening, weekend, and holiday availability will be required, especially during Christmas, Easter, and major church events.
Other Qualifications:
The ideal Worship Pastor will have but is not required to: Have a decent golf game (we need an experienced golfer for bi-monthly tournaments or as necessary). Have basic adult softball fundamentals. Have a good sense of humor. Other duties as assigned.
