Job Description:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Graduate Resident Director (RD) is a live-in paraprofessional of the Department of Housing & Residential Services who reports directly to a member of the professional staff. The position's primary role is in the administration and supervision of one of the residence areas housing between 150-200 students. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: the daily functioning and management of the residence area that they have been assigned, community development, staff supervision, programming, crisis intervention, administrative organization, and facilities/operational management. The RD will assist with student staff selection, training, and supervision, the conduct system, and student leadership and development.
Supervisor:
Depending on functional assignment and/or placement supervision will fall within one of the full-time professional staff members which may include, Associate Director, Assistant Director, or Area Coordinator.
Functional Assignment:
Each graduate assistant will also have a functional assignment within the department. The department reserves the right to change the functional assignment as needed.
GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Supervises Resident Assistants (RA) and/or Community Desk Assistants (CDA) assigned to the residence area. Provides individual/group supervision on a regular basis and completes written evaluations each semester. 2. Participates in the recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of RAs and/or CDAs . Attends and participates in all in-service trainings for staff and assists in creating and implementing these trainings. 3. Participates in rotating on-campus duty responsibilities on weekends, weeknights, and vacation periods, and during emergencies. 4. Addresses behavioral concerns, works with staff on student concerns, submits Incident Reports to the appropriate offices, and acts as a hearing officer in conduct cases. 5. Responsible for explaining and enforcing departmental and campus policies. 6. Responsible for establishing and maintaining community relations with students living in the residence halls through individual contacts and group interactions. 7. Ensures the completion of Resident Assistant programming and community building requirements. Provides leadership and support for staff and student programming efforts within their assigned residence area. 8. Acts as a resource person and referral agent and advises students regarding personal, educational, behavioral, and residence hall concerns. RD advises students within the realms of training and refers students to appropriate campus services as needed. 9. Manages the residence hall in coordination with staff members and appropriate offices to ensure proper day-to-day functioning of the building. 10. Responsible for opening the residence hall in the fall and after breaks, and for hall closings prior to breaks and the end of the academic year. Responsible for the distribution and collection of keys/cards, management of key box and key inventory, and monitoring of room inventories. 11. Uses access software to assist in OneCard management, as requested. 12. Forwards and follows-up with Maintenance Request Orders, and is responsible for being familiar with issues and concerns in their residence area. 13. Coordinates the implementation of the damage process for individuals and/or common area community assessment charges. 14. Utilizes departmental assessment data to set action plans for their residence area, and assists in departmental planning. 15. Be attentive to the residential needs in such areas as safety, security, and emergency situations (i.e. wellness checks, work with University Police and Health & Safety Inspections). 16. Participates in efforts put forth by the department, which may include participation in Admission Office Open Houses, campus special events and/or working groups. 17. Support the CARE Team with appropriate follow-up through wellness checks. 18. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's Degree and enrollment in a Fitchburg State University graduate program. 2. Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion work and the ability to appropriately and effectively understand and adapt to cultural differences within a group environment. 3. Experience in crisis response or working through situations requiring adherence to protocol. 4. Effective oral and written communication skills. 5. Interpersonal skills including the ability to relate and engage with a diverse student population. 6. Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board/Sexual Offender Registry Information (CORI/SORI check); a background check satisfactory to the university. 7. Ability to perform above duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Previous experience working in Residence Life. 2. Experience as a Resident Assistant.
Additional Information:
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
1. An annual stipend of $12,000. 2. Six academic credits of tuition remission for the fall and spring semesters. 3. Partially furnished apartment with utilities and internet. 4.
