Senior Assistant Resident Engineer (Sr. ARE) to join our team of construction professionals. As an NCDOT Sr. ARE, you will be assigned to one or more active construction sites and be responsible for verifying the quality and compliance of project activities in accordance with North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) standards and specifications. You will have the opportunity to advance your skillset through on-the-job training as well as attendance at certification classes. Key Responsibilities Duties will include but may not be limited to:
Construction Oversite:
Act as the on-site representative of the owner, supporting the Resident Engineer in all aspects of project execution. Monitor daily construction activities to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and contract requirements. Evaluate field conditions and provide technical guidance to contractors, Engineers of Record, and stakeholders. Identify and resolve complex construction issues through sound engineering judgment and collaboration. Conduct frequent site visits to assess progress, address concerns, and ensure quality outcomes with minimal cost impact.
Documentation and Reporting:
Reconcile project quantities with contractors and assist in preparation and execution of monthly estimates. Calculate and administer pay adjustments related to failed material testing (e.g., concrete and asphalt cores). Review and approve RFIs (Requests for Information) and submittals for compliance and accuracy. Analyze costs and prepare justification for supplemental agreements and contract modifications. Evaluate and assist in the review and resolution of contractor claims. Maintain detailed records of project activities, including negotiations, decisions, and key discussions. Document weekly project updates, site observations, risks, and unresolved issues. Supervision of Inspection Staff Lead, mentor, and manage construction inspection personnel. Assign and coordinate daily inspection activities to support construction operations. Review and approve inspector daily reports and project documentation. Ensure staff members are properly trained and equipped to perform assigned duties. Schedule and oversee night work operations as needed. Conduct employee performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback.
Quality Assurance:
Ensure all construction work complies with applicable specifications, standards, and approved plans. Review inspection reports and verify accuracy and completeness of documentation. Monitor testing procedures and results to ensure materials meet quality requirements. Address deficiencies promptly and coordinate corrective actions with project stakeholders. Promote best practices to achieve durable, high-quality construction outcomes.
Safety Compliance:
Promote and enforce adherence to safety standards for construction personnel and the traveling public. Identify potential safety risks and work collaboratively to mitigate hazards. Conduct and lead regular safety meetings with inspection staff and project teams. Monitor construction activities for compliance with OSHA and project-specific safety requirements. Encourage a culture of safety awareness and accountability across the project team.
Communication:
Facilitate and/or participate in pre-construction, progress, environmental, and change order meetings. Serve as a liaison between contractors, government agencies, engineers, and project stakeholders. Communicate project expectations, updates, and decisions clearly and effectively. Document and manage discussions related to disputes, negotiations, and project changes. Coordinate with internal and external teams to ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. Minimum Qualifications Minimum of 10+ years of experience as a CEI Inspector or Project Manager on NCDOT projects Prior NCDOT Construction Inspection or Project Manager experience. A strong sense of responsibility, a positive attitude, and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team Ability to perform field measurements and complete mathematical calculations to determine areas and volumes, and convert between units Ability to manage and support mid to senior level inspection staff. Ability to make judgement calls in the field regarding construction issues encountered. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions Willingness to work weekends and nights if required Valid driver's license and favorable driving record Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Preferred Qualifications Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Associate Degree in Engineering or a related field Prior experience as an Assistant Resident Engineer or as a Project Manager on NCDOT projects. Familiarity with NCDOT Standards and Specifications Current or previously held the following certifications: NCDOT Concrete Field Technician ACI Concrete Field Level I NCDOT Erosion and Sediment Control Level
