Job Description

Assistant Director for Residential Life Alfred State College is excited to invite energetic, student centered professionals to apply for the role of Assistant Director (AD) for Residential Services for the 2025-26 academic year. This full time, 12month, live in position plays a pivotal leadership role within our Residential Services team. If you are passionate about student learning, committed to building inclusive communities, and ready to lead programs that shape the residential experience, this is an opportunity to make a powerful impact from day one. Position Overview Assistant Directors at Alfred State manage the daily operations of residential programs and services, ensuring that our residence halls are vibrant, supportive environments where students can thrive. The AD is a key campus leader who maintains strong visibility and engagement by attending events, touring facilities, and offering consistent presence for staff and residents. This position directly supervises both professional and student staff, conducts weekly supervision meetings, leads department and area gatherings, and supports individuals in their professional growth and job performance. Key Responsibilities Assistant Directors oversee residential facilities, uphold campus policies, and engage with residents to build strong communities grounded in respect, inclusion, and belonging. They coordinate policy compliance, respond to student concerns, ensure safety procedures are followed, and support community standards in collaboration with campus partners. Training, selection, and recognition are central elements of this role. ADs manage recruitment and onboarding processes for Residential Services, develop professional and student staff training, and deliver ongoing development in areas such as conflict resolution, emergency response, programming, and community facilitation. As hearing officers for the campus conduct system, they provide both formal and informal feedback, promote accountability, and guide students toward personal and academic success. Assistant Directors support departmental and divisional initiatives, assist with strategic goals, and contribute to professional development activities. They help create living environments that support academic success, personal growth, and positive engagement. Key responsibilities include co-leading the residential curriculum, strengthening living-learning communities, developing co-curricular programming, and shaping educational initiatives that promote student success across campus. Some responsibilities are shared between First Year Residential Experience oversight and special periods management, while others focus on Upper Class Residential Experience, training, and selection processes. Across all areas, ADs play an essential leadership role in designing, implementing, and assessing residential learning initiatives. Assistant Directors also participate in an after hours duty rotation as part of the Residential Life leadership team, providing support, guidance, and coordinated response across campus. Ideal Candidate Profile Successful candidates demonstrate initiative, clear and effective communication, strong collaboration skills, and a genuine investment in student learning and community building. The ability to lead teams, support staff development, oversee programs, and manage multiple responsibilities is essential.
